Harvest will be early and there will be lots of time for the twitch to grow to the ideal growth stage for chemical treatment which is 15 to 20 cm. Plowing is a necessary part of the chemical treatment and should be done five days after the application of Roundup. Waiting for the twitch to look dead is a common mistake. Also, if you plan to use Roundup, don't cultivate or disc after harvest because it is necessary to wait 60 growing days follow- ing cultivation for the twitch to be ready to spray. Be sure "to follow all label instructions. WINTER CEREALS The more top there is on winter wheat and barley, the more chance there is of in- fection from crop residues. Head Blight, Bunts, Mildew, Snow Mold, Tan Spot, Foot Rots, Eyespot, Take -All and Barley Yellow Dwarf are diseases that spread from crop residue. The suggested time for seeding winter cereals is September 25 to October 10. The other method of disease prevention is clean plowing (burying all residue) This is opposite to the recommended practices to prevent erosion, but the disease control is worth the risk to the soil. TRIPARTITE STABILIZATION An option has been developed for feeder cattle along with a combined slaughter/feeder option. The margin prin- cipal was used in the new option similar to the slaughter cattle and hog options. The details are too involved for a newspaper report. The basic concept is that 90 percent of the margin between the national average market price and national average pro- duction costs for each quarter is guaranteed. The production costs include the replacement animal, feed, transporta- tion, interest and selling charges. The plan was designed deliberately not to interfere with the market place. This concept is superior to plans that are only tied to the market place. There is a possibility of payment under the margin, concept even in the face of high market place prices if costs rise faster than the market. Full details and applications are available at OMAF offices. The deadline for application is August 31, 1987. Apparently three. One holds the ladder while the other nails the screen. The third gentleman watches to assure that all goes according to plan. No matter how many it took, it was a job well done.
