Agricrew News Release
The Agricrew program is now underway
in Bruce County. To successfully cover the
entire county the crews are based from
Chesley, Kincardine and Walkerton. The
crews are covered by Worker's Compensa-
tion and the crews provide their own lunch
and transporation to the job site.
For farmers and agricultural organiza-
tions the program provides the services of
an energetic, hard-working four -person
crew for the cost of $90 per eight hour day.
The crews provice a good source of
reliable labour for peak periods as well as
providing and excellent source of labour
for odd jobs.
To be eligible for an Agricrew all the
farmer or agricultural organization has to
do is have the Agricrew work at some
agriculturally relateV-task. There are
some working conditions that Agricrew
workers cannot be subjected to. Agricrew
members may not operate power take -offs
or chain saws, work with creosote, work on
second storey construction; or drive farm
vehicles on public roads. Other than work
involving these rules, Agricrew is an ideal
source of labour for such jobs as haying,
painting, weeding, picking stones, fencing,
general clean up, garden maintenance,
etc.
For more details on booking Agricrew
call Dave Percival at the Canada Farm
Labour Pool in Walkerton at 881-3671.
FORAGES
Some alfalfa fields took a beating be-
cause of the excessive rainfall in the fall
of '86 and heaving during the winter. We
get questions about spreading seed on hay
fields to thicken the stand. This practice
will work to a limited extent on most
species. The ideal time is very late in the
fall just before or after the first snow fall.
The snow and frost will work the seeds into
the ground ready for germination in the
spring.
Unfortunately alfalfa plants produce a
substance that is toxic to young alfalfa
plants and therefore alfalfa stands cannot
be improved by top seeding.
Fall Seeding
Any field that must be seeded in the fall
should be seeded in August. This gives the
plants time to store sufficient nutrients in
the roots to withstand the winter.

Slaughter/Feeder Cattle Tripartite
Stabilization
A Tripartite Stabilization for Feeder
Cattle has been added to the cattle
programs.
. A public meeting will be held Tuesday,
July 21 at 8 p.m. in the Chesley Community
Centre to present the plan to beef

There has also been a major change in
the support formula for slaughter cattle

of the five year quarterly margin from 50
per cent .
441 Queen Competition
Promoting 4-H in the county is on the
agenda of the newly crowned Miss Bruce
County 4-H Queen. Kendra Pennington, 15
year old daughter of Donna & Ray Penn-
ington of Teeswater was selected from 10
contestants at the Paisley Community
Centre on July 4.
Kendra's 4-H career includes the com-
pletion of eight projects both in agriculture
and life skill clubs. Her experience at judg-
ing competitions and speech making at
school has prepared her for her new
duties.
Kendra will be representing 4-H at
agricultural fairs, Achievement Days and
other 4-H functions. First runner-up is
Teresa Schuler of Kincardine. The con-
testants chose Connie Borth for Miss Con-
geniality. The 4-H Queen Competition was
organized by the Bruce County 4-11 Coun-
cil. Thank you to the sponsors and judges
for supporting 4-H in Bruce County.

Bruce County Library
asks for your support
The Bruce County Public Library, in co-
operation with their local branch libraries,
is seeking public support in a campaign to
raise funds for the purchase of video
cassettes.
The Ministry of Citizenship and Culture
is providing lottery -based funding to sup-
port the purchase of video -cassettes; 50%
of the total cost, to a maximum of $15,000.
In other words, if with your help, we can
raise $15,000 we will have a total of $30,000
with which to buy video -cassettes.
The collection of video cassettes current-
ly available to the branches of the Bruce
County Public Library is very small. We
would like to make as many useful educa-
tional and entertaining videos available to
patrons of the library as possible. As it is
not our intention to be a competitor to the
local video stores, we will primarily pur-
chase video cassettes with Public Perfor-
mance Rights; this allows us to use them
for Library Programs and for other
organizations to view as a group. The
average cost varies from $80 to $250 per
title.
Donation jars or boxes have been placed
in each Branch Library for you to drop in
your public donations. Any donation in ex-
cess of $5.00 will qualify for a tax deducti-
ble receipt, which will be issued by the
Bruce County Public Library.
If you belong to an organization that has
not been approached about his project and
you are interested in helping please con-
tact your local branch library or the Bruce
County Public Library at 832-6935.
This campaign is being run June 15 to
•September 15., 1987 with an aim to build the
video cassette collection and provide a
new service throughout Bruce County
Libraries. Please be generous and support
your library !
