Would you beleive another Lucknow? This village of 400 is located in South Carolina and,
thanks to the help of Mrs. Brewer, we were able to find out a little bit 'about 'the other
Lucknow'. Notice the Baptist Church on the right.
This spring, when Jim McNaughton, Jr.
and his wife Maureen of RR2 Belwood
were returning from Florida, they spotted
a sign in South Carolina reading `Lucknow
4 miles'.
After stopping and chatting with the lady
who ran the Exon Gas Station in 'the other
Lucknow', Jim and Maureen returned
home. Since that time, Jim's mother Susan
McNaughton was able to make contact
with the women, a Mrs. Thelma Brewer of
RR4 Bishopville, South Carolina. It would
appear that this Lucknow is a bedroom
community of Bishopville.
Mrs. Brewer provided Susan with some
general information about the Lucknow
south. Apparently, this Lucknow got its
name from some timber people who, years
ago, bought large timber with turpentine
stills and made a great deal of money on
the venture. They saying was that they had
found 'luck now',
The population of Lucknow is about 400
people, however, in the 1920's they had a
train station with at least two trains on a
daily basis.
Mrs. Brewer has run the store in
Lucknow for 46 years and is. looking for-
ward to retirement as she is some 78 years
young. Her father, Henry W. Hyatt was the
postmaster in Lucknow for more than 20
years. He died in 1940 and the post office
was removed. After that Lucknow became
RR4 Bishopville for mailing purposes.
Mrs. Brewer reports that her communi-
ty is one of agriculture in which beans, cot-
ton and corn are the major crops each
year. They also have a very nice Baptist
Church she says.
While it's nice to think that our com-
munity is unique in the world, it is always
interesting to find another spot that, in
many ways, is similar.
