To the Editor;
From a vantage point, no need to rove
around the village to feel its pulse. From a
vantage point, one can see who is new in
the village, who is back, who is passing
through and who is considering it a track
for showmanship.
True, there is not much to see in the
village as one reader wrote last week.
Although modernism settles in, the pic-
turesque quality of the village resides in its
peacefulness. Lucknow is a place of relax-
ation. Some would consider it a dormitory
for yuppies working in adjacent towns, but
most residents consider it a bona fide
place to get away from the agitation and
disheartening coldness of the big cities;
therefore the lack of sensational news in
our local paper. It is logical to ,say that
local correspondents write about what
they know best: people. What people do
and what people forcus their interests on.
My interest is to see traffic for what it is -
a regulated priviledge for all to enjoy. If
modernism has to show its mark in the
village more apparently than in two new
places of business, it should start where
the leaders of the community gather for
deliberation.
A Town Hall wothout a parking lot is a
thing of the past. From my vantage point, I
see the annoyment, the frustration as well
as the apprehension of people obligated to
park in the street when whatever calls
them calls theft.' to the Town Hall.
Crossing the highway with tiny tots
eager to enter the Library is often a nerve-
racking experience for young mothers.
As for the few residents owning private
drives near the Town Hall, it is sometimes
° - quite a challenge to enter their property or
to back away from it.
Comments and remarks in that vein are
what make Lucknow what it is. Dullness is
in the eye of the beholder. Besides tourists
fairly doing it, we now have two drivers
thinking of nothing to drive onto the
sidewalks or spinning in the middle of
traffic.
Who said nothing ever happens here°
Yours Truly,
A. Joe Legrand
To the Editor;
I_ was somewhat surprised when reading
the July 8 issue of the Lucknow Sentinel to
learn that you have been accused of filling
the paper with gossip...I wonder if the
writer checked the dictionary to see what
the word means. My dictionary reads -
"idle talk and rumors about others".
I have been reading the Sentinel since
the days when A. D. MacKenzie was the
publisher right up to the present and it
never occurred to me at any time that
what I was reading gossip. I enjoy the
news of our cummunity (although there

communities. That some of it may be a lit-
tle late doesn't bother me in the least. I
find the odd grammatical error and
mistake in spelling, but these are things of
which we are all guilty at times.
Keep giving us the "gossip". I look for-
ward to reading each .week. Don't be,
discouraged by trifling criticism.

The Transportation Study Committee of
the Wingham and District Hospital are
gratified by the response from the sur-
rounding communities regarding the
transportation questionnaire recently cir-
culated in Hospital Foundation mailing.
There is a concern that has come from
the questionnaires. If a transportation ser-
vice for the elderly, frail and disabled is
put, into place, the intention is not to
replace current transportation systems,
but to complement those that are already
in place.
There are a number of people in the com-
munity who are unable to use current
systems due to disability, such as, those in
wheelchairs. Use of a van with a
wheelchair lift is much safer for both the
person in the ' chair and the driver.
The recent survey returns indicate that
there is a need for specialized trandsporta-
tion services during the evening and on
weekends for personal, social and recrea-
tional activities. Such a service would give
everyone equal opportunity to participate
in activities that those of us who are not
disabled take for granted.
The more questionnaires returned the
better and more accurate the results will
be. If you haven't filled out a form yet,
please do, even if you wouldn't such a ser-
vice at present but may in the future or, if
a family member or friend could use this
service.
Completed questionnaires should be sent
directly to Box 1405, Wingham, Ontario,
NOG 2W0. You can receive further infor-
mation by contacting Sandra Shantz at the
