HOT HAY Spontaneous combustion can cause wet hay or dry haylage to ignite anytime dur- ing tie first month or even longer after harvest. Usually the first indication is that un- mistakable smell of hot hay and maybe steam rising from the mow or silo. Make sure you visit the storage area every day. Without a thermometer any rod or pipe pushed into the hay 1 ' z meters will give an indication. If you can hold onto the metal when it is removed from the hay with your bare hand it will be less than 65 C and if you can only touch it for an instant it is 80 C or over and the material should be remov- ed. Never attempt to remove hot hay alone or without the local fire brigade standing by. TIME TO, 'SPRAY YOUR LAWN FOR HAIRY C'HINrH BUGS In recent years', ( oncern over chinch bugs causing damage to lawns has in- creased. Many lawns are only partially damaged but in severe cases the entire lawn will be damaged to such an extent that it must be entirely renovated. Chinch bugs have piercing mouthparts through which they suck the sap from the crown and stems of turfgrasses. The result is dead, brown, irregular sunken dead pat- ches in the lawn. The adult chinch bug spends the winter congregated under trees and shrubs and )n the edges of lawns under hedges and in lower beds. As the temperatures become warmer in the spring, the adults move into :he lawn and begin depositing eggs. These ..ggs hatch in late May and become adults by mid-July. Adults do the damage. Severe Damage is not noticed until August after the occurrence of several weeks of hot, dry weather. Three insecticides" are registered for control of chinch bugs: carbaryl (Sevin ), diazinon i Basudin and chlorpyrifos ( Dursban) . Because chinch bugs tend to avoid light at the lawn surface and will crawl into crevices in the soil below, good penetration of the insecticide is essential. -Treatment should precede rainfall if possi- ble, or if this does not occur use a lawn sprinkler for an hour following application. Apply these insecticides during the se- cond week of July in order to kill the chinch bugs before they kill your lawn. A well-written factsheet entitled "Hairy Chinch Bugs in Lawns" is available at your local OMAF office. The Ministry of the En- vironment investigates incidents relating to the discharge, emission, addition of pollutants into the natural environment (land, air, water) . The following is an example of how the citizens of Grey and Bruce can provide assistance to the Ministry of the Environ- ment in relation to any such offences. Headquarters from a Normanby Township landowner about the discovery of the suspected dum- ping of a large quantity of septic tank waste material over a wooded embank- ment next to the Beatty Saugeen River. The concerned citizen advised O.P.P. of ficers that the sewage material had the potential of polluting the Beatty"Saugeen, a valuable trout stream . characterized by excellent water quality. Acting on the, information received, the O.P.P. immediately contacted the Owen Sound District Office of the Ministry of the Environment.
