She described the services provided to abused women with or without children at the Survival Through Friendship House in Goderich since it began operating two years ago. The house is presently filled to over capacity and such is the case at all 77 shelters in Ontario. At the shelter the women are provided with medical atten- tion, one hour free legal advice and refer- ral to Legal Aid and other social service agencies as needed. For women who are abused, the police must now lay criminal assault charges; it is no longer up to the woman to do so. Help is available for men who abuse, at classes held in Clinton. At times, the courts will order a man to take these 12 week sessions. The main objec- tive at the House is to break the cycle of family violence so children will not grow up thinking this is a normal way of life. There is also advice and understanding available for women who just wish to talk rather than leave the man who is abusing her. Mrs. Taylor noted tha staff at the house have received obscene phone calls, death threats and actual attempts at serious in- jury. Because of this, stress leaves and developmental days are available to then.. A donation of grocery items for the House was made to June Taylor by the members. Other donations from the public of fur- niture, food, clothing and other household articles are always gratefully accepted. To contact the House, call 524.6245 or toll free at 1-800-265-5506. Following a very lively question and discussion period, business was attended to. An invitation was read from the Ripley Women's Institute for their Hospital Tea on June 16. A bake table will be set up at the Coop yard sale to be held in late July. Heidi Fulmore will represent the Junior Institute in the Miss Lucknow Fall Fair competition. A letter was read from the Junior Women's Institute of Ontario ex- ecutive. A motion had teen tabled to dis- band the provincial structure of the JWIO due to difficulty is recruiting provincial ex- ecutive members and lack of attendance at executive meetings. Some discussion took place and this will continue at future meetings. The motion will 'be voted on following the Fall Con- ference in October. It's said that travel broadens the mind. It seems that our jobs are sending us out on that mind -broadening road more frequent- ly these days. According to Statistics Canada, Canadians took 14.6 million tripS of at least one night from January to March 1986, a rise of 21 percentover the figure for the same period in 1984. The in- crease in business trips during that time accounts for most of this growth: travel on business for one night or more increased by 77 per cent over the level for the cor- responding period in 1984.
