Alzheimer's wheel-a-thon held
Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home would
like to thank everyone who donated money
toward the Alzheimer Wheel-a-thon on
June 12. This money will go toward the
Alzheimer's research fund. Thanks also to
Diane Hackett at the Super Scoop for
donating the ice-cream as her part in our
fund raising. Also to the people who got
pledges. A very special thank -you to
everyone who assisted in pushing
wheelchairs.
On June 5, Gerald Murray treated
residents and staff to a horse and wagon
ride. This brought back many memories
and the residents are still talking about
their ride.
On June 8 the Kinettes treated the
residents to a bus ride to Point Clark and
also an ice-cream cone. The residents at
Pmecrest and the Kinettes would especial-
ly like to thank Montgomery Motors for the
bus which they gave to us free of charge.
Isobelle Shepherd donated her time and
drove for us.
Murray Elston visited Pinecrest last
Friday afternoon to talk to resident, staff
and family members.
During Alzheimer's week (June 22-25),
films are available if anyone would like to
know more about this disease. Anyone in-
terested should contact the home to set up
a time. We encourage you to try and come
because these films tell of other people
with Alzheimer's, their problems and how"
the families are adjusting. Tickets are
also being sold for a summer lounger to
raise money for Alzheimers.
Alzheimer's is a disease that affects
about 300,000 Canadians. It is a
debilitating disease that. causes memory
loss and serious mental deterioration.
There is no known cure or prevention for
the disease which is now the fourth most
common form of death among Canadians.
People from the age of 40 onward can be
affected although the majority of victims
are 65 and over. Fund raising is and an-
nual event co-ordinated each year
throughout the province by the Ontario
Nursing Home Association in order to sup-
port this worthy cause. All funds raised go
towards research. Since 1984, over
$167,000 has been raised for Alzheimer's
research.
