Winning essay on 'Marigolds'
olds'
by LOPS student Tara Thacker
By Tara Thacker
Do you have Tagetes in your flower
gardens? These Tagetes have a strong,
musky odor and are used to protect
tomatoes. That's right these yellow,
orange and gold strange plants from Mex-
ico and South America are Marigolds.
The Marigolds need very little care and
grow 20 to 40 cm high. With large blooms,
this plant lives from July to September.
The Lucknow and District Horticultural
Society has chosen the Marigold as their
flower because it can be well used as a
border plant or just to fill space. There is
only one problem and that is slugs may eat
our friend or grey mould could occur in
wet weather.
You can get tall or small sized
marigolds, the tallest is the African
Marigold and the smallest is the French,
Marigold. Each with long stems.
I know myself I will be glad to drive
down the main street of Lucknow and see
Marigolds in every garden and at every
home in Lucknow but until then stay
yellor, orange or gold and always
remember our Tagetes !
Dungannon W1 members
tour Pine River factory
On Thurs. June 4th our Canadian In-
dustries Tinie Logtenberg planned a visit
to Pine River Cheese factory for our
members. We met here at 11 aan. Before
going to upper floor of the building we had
the opportunity to go through the store and
those who wished were able to purchase
cheese. After going upstairs we were
shown the different steps in cheese mak-
ing. They were making cheese curds at
this time and this was very interesting to
watch. We were treated to crackers,
cheese and coffee here. Then we saw slides
on the different steps of producing cheese
from cow to finished product.
Here we had a short meeting. The
meeting opened by members repeating the
Mary Stewart Collect. The roll call was
answered by 18 members present. After
reading minutes of last meeting the Cor-
respondent and Treasurers gave their
reports. It was decided on the completion
of 12, 4-H Clubs either boy or girl would
receive an Institute spoon. There were dif-
ferent donations made to different pro-
jects. After the Collection and pennies for
Freindship were received the meeting
closed by Singing 0 Canada. Next we were
at the Bruce Inn, Kincardine for a noon
dinner. The next and last place we visited
was Agri. Park. At this time we were given
a talk by the attendant of the Greenhouses.
He explained the growing of tomatoes
from planting seeds to full growth. We
were able to buy tomatoes here. They had
a few boxed flower plants which you were
able to purchase. This brought a lovely day
to a close. Thanks to "Tinie". I am sure we
all enjoyed the day as well as the shopping
opportunity after.

Bantam softball team wins game
The Lucknow Bantam boys softball
team opened the season in a shaky way,
committing five errors in the first three in-
nings, but then settled down to play good
ball for the next four innings to edge Mount
Forest 7-6 recently.
Some timely hitting in the last three inn-
ings by Charles Murray, Kent Campbell,
Brad Murray and Rod Crich produced a
come -from -behind victory.
Matt Rhody pitched the entire game
allowing four hits, three walks and striking
out nine.
