Ottawa- subscriber passes
on his report of bluebirds
TO
To the Editor:
Perusal of my bank book informs me
that my subscription is rather late, so
herewith my apology and cheque.
If you care to pass on to my wildlife con-
servation friends in the Lucknow area,
bluebirds on my bluebirdtrail had by May
16 laid about 150 eggs, of which 65 had hat-
ched. This compares favorably with that of Eastern Ontario and Quebec with en -
last year, but, sad to say, cold, wet couraging results.
weather had caused a mortality of 24
young.
Since organizing a New Horizons project
on saving the bluebird, I have, on request,
mailed hundreds of leaflets throughout

Historical Society learns about
changes of animal life at meeting
On Friday, May 22, 85 members of the
Bruce County Historical Society travelled
to Tobermory Lodge at the tip of the Bruce
Peninsula for their May general meeting.
Following dinner, Mr. Vince Elliot, a
noted authority on the plant and animal
life of the area, was guest speaker. His
topic was about the changes that have
taken place during the last centure in the
animal, bird, fish and plant life of the
peninsula lands and waters. Some
animals, for example the beaver, have
been introduced to the detriment of the
local forests. Commercial fishing has
been greatly reduced, as has the lumber-
ing industry. He spoke of his excitement
on discovering a new orchid. Mr. Elliot
certainly aroused the audience's interest,
particularly in plant life.
Saturday morning saw many of the
guest boarding the glass bottomed boat for
a guided tour among the islands.
Luncheon speaker was Mr. Stan
McLellan, who is Park Superintendent of
Fathom Five Provincial Park. He showed
slides of some of the 19 shipwrecks in the
area and explained the work of the
Ministry of Natural Resources in the park.
The Historical Society is planning a bus
trip to Milton Agricultural Museum on Ju-
ly 16.
