Playschool opens at former school
By Alan Rivett
Every Tuesday morning, the former
Kinloss school is again open for classes.
But, this time it's used by a little different
type of student.
On this day, mothers from Holyrood and
area bring their pre-schoolers to the
playschool which has recently opened at
the former school.
In the course of the morning at the
school, which begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends
at 11:45 a.m., the children engage in
crafts, are read stories, engage in sing-
songs and play games every Tuesday.
More importantly, says Barb Murray,
one of the founders of the playschool, it
gives the children a chance to get together
and gives the mothers a welcome break
during the week.
"The mothers wanted the kids in the
area to get together without a lot of costs
involved," she said of the school whiei
opened in the school on March 10.
Mrs. Murray said she and her sister-in-
law Marilyn Murray started the school to
give their children a chance to meet and
play with other area pre-schoolers. Both
said they have had experience working
with pre-schoolers with Mrs. Barb Murray
possessing a Early Childhood Education
diploma. Now, a total of 24 children all
from the ages of 1 to 5 are enrolled in the
playschool.
Best of all, the cost of attending the
playschool is very reasonable. For only $1,
the children get snacks as well as all the
supplies needed for the various activities
planned by the parents. The only catch is
the parents of the tots are expected to help
out with the supervision and planning of
activities for the children, said the
organizers.
Both are satisfied with the school
facilities supplied by the . Township, of
Kinloss to house the prayschool. The gym
and one classroom are used for the weekly
playschool activities as well as the
playground. "We have excellent
facilities," said Barb Murray.
When asked about the possiblity of ex-
panding the playschool into a government -
subsidized daycare centre, both said they
were "unsure" of the demand for daycare
in the area, as well as dealing with the
numerous government guidelines which
have to be adhered to.

are very enthusiastic about coming to the
school, with most coming regularly every
Tuesday.
"They seem to enjoy it. They keep com-
ing back and nobody comes to school or
goes home crying," said Mrs. Barb
Murray.
Both agree not all the feedback from the
playschool has been positive, with some of
the parents giving their comments on what
should be done to make the playschool
better.
"Most parents appreciate what we're
variety of activities during playschool program held at the former
doing, but some have some constructive
criticism just to let us know what they
would like to do," said Marilyn Murray.
In the future, the school plans to have
some small field trips to interesting places
in the area as well as having a graduation
party for those who will be entering
kindergarten next year. Also, the
playschool will be having an open house on
Wednesday, May 27 and a Yard Sale on
June 26 and 27 to help raise money for the
school.
