Mini -Author's Conference coming to LCPS
By Kevin Springer and Carl Anson
Kindergarten
Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, dinosaurs! ! The
Kindergarten room is full of dinosaurs!
They watched an interesting movie on
dinosaurs and saw how their bones were
discovered in England. They also saw dif-
ferent kinds of dinosaurs. The "K"
students are now making their own books
about the "terrible" lizards.
Grade 1
Grade 1 has made an interesting little
zoo in their terrarium with a baby painted
turtle, four toads and two frogs and snails.
They hope to get some tadpoles to watch
too.
The students made up songs about
"Allie-Jo's Snail". The books are all ready
for the Mini -Authors' Conference on Fri-
day, May 29. The "Reading Kites" are
growing long tails from all the books the
Grade 1 students have read. The "Special
Me" this week is Jason Ellis.
Grade 2
Grade 2 is concluding their Spring
Reading Activities and is excited about the
novels which have arrived in the room.
There are so many interesting tales they
don't know which one to choose first.
The class thought Frank Etherington's
book "The General" was a good one. It will
be really great to meet him in person at the
Mini -Authors' Conference.
Happy birthday to Shelly Johnston and
also to her mother.
Grade 3
Grade 3's were chosen "Class of the
Month" which entitles them to choose
something they would like to do with Mr.
Pike. They voted for: (1) Fun at the creek
or (2) High jumping; on the mat.
Grade 3 would like to share some tall
tales with you.
John Brophy and the Hockey Arena
By Chris Montgomery
Once upon a time after the Toronto
Maple Leafs won a hockey game, John
Brophy .told the arena manager, "I want
an arena 10 to 12 -miles long so that a 1,000
or more people can fit in it."
"Yes sir," said the arena manager.
So the arena manager phoned the con-
struction crew right then and told them
about the arena. They said, "O.K.".
It took them five years to build it. By
that time John Brophy was dead. They got
a new coach called Chris Montgomery.
Chris was only 13 -years -old and when they
played, only Brad Smith could shoot the
puck down the ice. At the end of the season,
they won the Stanley Cup and (continued)
to win it until the Earth was nowhere to be
seen.
The Insects That Took Off
In The Truck
By Mike Johnstone
There once was a trucker and he had lots
of food in his truck. There were a lot of in-
sects around his place.
• One day, the insects went into the truck
for dinner and found jam on the key; s 90
big insects jumped on the key and the
transport started. A couple of ants were on
the gas peddle. A couple more ants were on
the gear.
The ' truck started to move and they
wondered what to do. They got 101 miles
away when the truck started to run out of
gas. So, by mistake, they jumped onto the
steering wheel and they ended up at a gas
station. Nobody knows where the truck is
now.
How Montgomery's Buses are Yellow
.By Jeff Porter
A long time ago in Cocotown, Mon-
tgomery Buses 'were pink. Until one very
hot day a piece of the sun fell down on the
bus and it turned yellow.
Ian Montgomery, the owner of Mon-
tgomery Buses said, "Get these buses out
of here. No! No! don't move them," he
said.
A11 at once, he said, "Let's make them
longer.'
So they made them .60 feet • long and
painted 300 feet yellow and the other 300
feet pink, so everyone could get on at 49
bus stops. Everytime they turned they
would knock over a stop sign and the cop
would come after them.
So Ian got Corky Cozy to saw off the end
of them to 16 feet, and he did. That is how
Montgomery Buses aren't 600 feet long
anymore.
Grade 4
A special guest briefly visited the Grade
4 classroom this week. Ricky East brought
a baby sparrow in on Thursday morning.
The students wrote sensitive stories about
the feelings which they would experience if
they were caged birds who were set free.
They drew super pictures as well.
In art class, the children drew small
scale butterfies which will be transferred
onto larger papers. They are learning a lot
about scale.
Mrs. Broad and Mrs. Clooney attended a
conference about writing on Friday and
Saturday.
Grade 5
This week in Grade 5, the students have
been working with principles related to
volume. They're getting along very well.
Friday, they had a unit test in En-
vironmental Studies. The topic was "The
Atmosphere".
The students are also "in training" dur-
ing their gym class for the upcoming Field
Day.
The class is also looking forward to
meeting with Mr. Etherington on May 29.
Grade 7
Even though the class is missing half of
its students who have left with Mr. Cayley
on the annual band tour, the remaining
students have not been idle this week. One
of the activities has been attempting to
solve tricky questions such as this:
"Mr. Adams died, leaving his fortune of
$75,000 to his four grandsons. In his will it
stated that John was to receive twice as
much as Will, Allan was to receive twice as
much as John and Bi1I was to receive twice
as much as Allan. How much did each
LCPS
grandson receive?" -
The class wishes to offer you, the reader,
the challenge of solving this puzzle. Ask a
Grade 7 student to help if you are stuck!
Grade 8
The Grade 8 classroom has been a quiet
place to visit last week as only 18 students
were in attendance. Their classmates
were on the band trip.
The Gradellgraduation mural has been
started. Eventually, it will be a reflection
of the personalities of class members as
well as a pictorial summary of events
making up the Grade 8 year. Reminiscing
has. been fun! Everyone has different
memories to add which should make the
final product a delight.
