The Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-05-13, Page 5Lucknow Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, May 13, 1987—Page 5 UCW meetings have Mother's Day theme Uni, By Noma C mpbell The May meeting of Unit 1 of the Lucknow United Church Women was held on May 5 at the home of Mrs. Grace Gibson with an attendance of 15 members and one visitor. Leader Mrs. Grace Gibson opened the meeting by all repeating the "Purpose". Mrs. Noma Campbell chaired the devo- tional part of the meeting, opening with a short meditation entitled "Footprints". With the theme of the meeting being Mother's Day, all members told their mother's maiden name and, using the let- ters M -O -T -H -E -R, named a flower star- ting with each letter. The Scripture was read by Mrs. Edna MacDonald and a short meditation follow- ed with a prayer. Mrs. Bill Bolt gave a fitting reading on Mother's Day and a hymn was sung follow- ed by the singing of a duet by Mrs. Edith Webster and Mrs. Noma Campbell. The Apostle • study was taken by Mrs. Edith Webster choosing "Nathaneal", his name meaning "Gift of God". In choosing His followers, Jesus usually directed His appeal to the busy man of affairs, but not in this case as Nathaneal was a ' great dreamer and believer in prayer. All repeated the Lord's Prayer. The business part of the meeting was chaired by Mrs. Grace Gibson. She began with a reading. Several favorite hymns were sung and all music was accompanied by Mrs. Edith Webster on her little organ. The rollcall was answered with a Bible verse on gratitude and thankfulness. The Birthday Jar was passed for Mrs. Bill Bolt, Mrs. Grace Gibson and Mrs. Ed- na MacDonald and Happy Birthday was sung. A very successful Hobby Sale was held with Mrs. Edith Webster as the auctioneer and Mrs. Deanna Reavie as the book- keeper, netting $59.55. The UCW Benediction was repeated, Grace was sung and a social time followed. bringing an afternoon of fellowship and service to a close', Unit 2 By Mrs. Eldon Bradley Unit 2 of the Lucknow UCW met for their May meeting at the Sepoy Apartments on Tuesday, May 5. Mrs. Russell Button presided and open- ed with a poem. The members then sang one verse of a hymn. The rollcall was answered with the name of a mother in the Bible and a verse with "Mother". The minutes were read and approved and Mrs. Alex Hackett gave the treasurer's report. Mrs. Cardis had a June birthday and all sang Happy Birthday and took up the birthday jar collection. Follow- ing the commitee reports, Mrs. Button gave the announcements. Mrs. Cayley thanked the ladies for all they had done to make the "Old -Fashioned Tea" such a suc- cess. Mrs. Button closed the business with a prayer. Mrs. Albert Cook presided for the wor- ship and Mrs. Jim Mathers opened with a "Prayer of Faith". she also gave the scrip- ture reading and the meditation. In the meditiation, she gave examples of good news and bad news. In the scriptures, "Easter is the unexpected good news". Mrs. Cook read.a poem and also gave an interesting study on the Apostle Andrew. Mrs. William Hunter gave the closing prayer. All sang Grace and the lunch committee served refreshments. Mrs. Cook did an ex- cellent job as the auctioneer for the unit's bake and hobby sale, with the proceeds amounting to $72.60. Unit 3 Unit 3 met on May 5 at the home of Mrs. Marion McFarlane with 17 members and one visitor answering the rollcall with a verse on caring. The theme of the meeting was the "fami- ly". Mrs. Walden welcomed all and opened the meeting with a family poem. The minutes were read and adopted, the treasurer's report given, and the offering received and dedicated. Mrs. Cayley sent a thank -you note for all the help received at the Old -Fashioned Tea. Ten ladies attended the Thankoffering at Trinity and three attended a UCW social event in Hanover on Monday, May 4. An executive meeting will be held on May 26 at 8 p.m. Birthday greetings were extended to Mrs. Peddle and Mrs. Clarence Irwin. A box is located in front of the church for items for the Survival Through Friendship House in Goderich. The devotions were given by Mrs. Todd, Mrs. Jardine, Mrs. Walden. -Elaine Irwin was unable to attend. Mrs. Walden read the scripture and a hymn was sung. The meditation was given by Mrs. Todd as well as prayer by Mrs. Jardine. Another hymn was sung. Mrs. Walden gave a reading on Christianity in the home. The June meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Shields. At that time, a Hob- by Sale willtake place and everyone is to take part in the program. The visiting committee reported on their visiting schedule. The lunch committee of Mrs. Shields; Mrs. Wightman and Mrs. McDonald serv- ed a lovely lunch. Everyone enjoyed a pleasant half-hour reminiscing on family life in the early pioneer years. Unit 4 Unit 4 of the Lucknow United Church Women met �n Thursday, May 5 with an attendance of 24. The rollcall was CHURCH answered with a donation to support Moira Gracey, a Kincardine high school student who plans to go to Nicaragua in May. Mrs. Harold Greer, unit leader, opened the meeting with a Mother's Day poem. following the reading of the minutes of the last meeting, Mrs. Gordon Cayley extend- ed thanks to all who assisted at the church Teo Party, Reports were given by the treasurer, Mrs. Ken Cameron; 'community friend- ship, Mrs. Cliff Crawford; flowers, Mrs. Armstrong Wilson; and Amnesty, Mrs. Gordon Cayley. Mrs. Ken Cameron chaired the program assisted by her committee. Mrs. Bill Hunter read the scripture, Mrs. Susan Cooke gave the meditation, and Mrs. Bryce Elliott gave the prayer. The theme of the program was frierd- ship with Mrs. Cameron opening with a poem. Mrs. Gerald McFarlane favored with a pleasing piano solo. Short reading pertain- ing to the theme were read by Mrs. Alex Andrew, Mrs. George Whitby, Mrs. Bill Hunter, Mrs. Bob Finlay, Mrs. Cam Thompson and Miss Norma Weatherhead. Mrs. Elliott introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Glen McPherson of Ripley. She gave a delightful talk on friends, and related illustrations on both giving and receiving. Mrs. Cameron thanked the speaker. Readings on Mother's Day were given by Mrs. Charlie Anderson. Mrs. Cameron closed the meeting with prayer. A successful bake sale was held with Mrs. Allan Gibson as the auctioneer., F0RmE LOVE OF GOD. GIVE. The uniform is like a beacon on the street. It signals help. Compassion. Caring. But not many people know how much it takes to be a soldier in the Salvation Army. The inhuman hours. The incredible patience. The brutal situations. Taking,responsibility for those whom society is unable to take responsibility for. Providing help, and then hope, for the people who need it most. Butthey know.
