(Alan Rivett photo) Approximately 80 people from the village turned out to see the renovations recently completed in the downstairs of the Lucknow Town Hall during the open house on May 7. "Everyone thought it was just great. Everyone I spoke to .was really over- whelmed with the renovations," said Lucknow Clerk -Treasurer Bertha Whit - croft, who along with Reeve Herb Clark, and Councillors Eldon Man and George Anderson were on hand to greet the public at the open house. According to Mrs. Whitcroft, the renova- tions began in the first week of February after the village's grant application through the Ontario Ministry of Citizen- ship and Culture's Community Facilities Improvement Grant was approved. The village qualifiedfor a 50 per cent grant from the ministry for the project's 42,000 total cost. The work which was completed by local contractors was done just in time for the May open house, with the cupboards for the totally renovated kitchen area being the last thing to be installed, she said. The bulk of the renovation work was car- ried out on the east side of the town hall where the furnace room was previously located. Also, an updated kitchen and modern appliances were installed, as well as new washroom facilities with wheel chair access, closet space and a storage area. Mrs.' Edna Young, the secretary for the Drop -In Centre, was well pleased with the new area which they will use for their meetings, card games, and luncheons every Friday afternoon. "Everyone thought it was really nice," she said. The senior citizens group plans to apply for a New Horizons Grant for furnishing for the new area, she said. Largecrowd attends Costello seminar Brian Costello, a noted financial author and radio and television personality, gave some of his tips for successful investing to a packed house at the Lucknow Community Centre on May 7. Here, he signs his three best-selling books Money and How to Keep It, 101 Year Round Tax Tips and Step By Step Tax Guide for interested people at the seminar. (Alan Rivett photo) By Alan Rivett Now is the perfect opportunity to get into the investment game. But, your luck may run out if you wait until after June 18 - the day Federal Finance Minister Michael Wilson brings down the tax reform bill. This was the prediction of Brian Costello, a noted author of three best- selling books, radio and television per- sonality, and a speaker at over 200 invest- ment seminars annual. He appeared at the Lucknow ommunity Centre on May 7 to a packed house. The seminar was sponsored by the Financial Centre in Goderich. In making the statement, Costello says Michael Wilson's tax reform is a "vote - getting" move as the Conservatives have recognized that personal taxes are too high. However, there are both good and bad aspects to the upcoming tax reform. He says Wilson's proposed move to lower the personal taxation rates is "not truly the case". The percentage on which taxation is based will be lowered, explain- ing that $30,000 in taxible income will be taxed at 30 per cent instead of 40 per cent. However, because of the huge national deficit, Costello says the government's plan to reduce the tax rate is "smoke and mirrors" as the amount of income Cana- dians will pay taxes on will rise. "The government has no intention of lowering the tax rate," he said. Turn to page 2 Your Sentinel this week...
