Ac- cording to Murray McGill of Goderich, the .current president of the 42 -member club, the. club was started in 1969 after four or five couple who had been driving to Hanover to square dance decided to start a club in this area. The club started in Lucknow at the public school and has since switched to Brookside school where it has grew to its present size. "It just grew from there. Certainly there has been some turnover with some of the members moving away. But, there has been lots of new interest and young and old can do it," said Mr. McGill. He said the members come from all over Huron and Bruce Counties, with most of the 42 members situated in West Wawanosh and Ashfield Townships, with some members from Goderich and also from Huron Township in Bruce County. Still popular Why is square dancing still as popular today as it was in the 1800's? Mr. McGill explains it's a form of recreation couples can do together, and it's offers good exer- cise. But, mainly, it's just plain fun. "It's fun, it's good exercise, and it's also a great social activity. You meet all kinds of people. You're also so busy having a good time, you forget all your problems," says Mrs. Lois McGill, also a member of the club. With the large number of calls which can be incorporated into a square dance, 69 basic calls to be exact, you would think it would be difficult to learn the art of square dancing? Not so, says Mr. Lockrey. "If you can walk, you can square dance," he claims. "All you have to learn is how to move left or right. Some people says they can'tsquarea dance because they have two left feet. In fact, they're the easiest ones to teach". Square dancing is something you "learn .by doing", says Mr. Lockrey. To start, the caner win work with two to three basic square dancing calls and continue to build from there. "It may only take about 40 nights of dan- cing before you can learn the 69 basics. The average couple will start to feel com- fortable with square dancing in about 20 minutes. It starts basic and progresses from there. "They feel a sense of accomplishment once they learn they can square dance. It's the fear of the unknown which keeps peo- ple from square dancing," he said. While square dancing has a long history, it has changed over the year, says Mr. Lockrey. In the past, one couple in the square would do one pattern while the other three couples would do the same move and there was also a limited number of calls. In the modern version of square dancing, there is far lessrepetition with all four couples doing a different pattern than the rest of the couples in the square. However, Mr." Lockrey says there is a certain stigma attached to square danc- ing. "It's not jumping around to fiddle tunes." In fact, many of the top country and western songs and pop songs now can be adapted for use in square dancing. "We've got to get away from that image. If I had known what square dancing was really all about, I would have started 20 years ago," said Mr. Lockrey who has been calling square dances since 1978. The Huron -Bruce Swingers also have an hour of "Round Dancing" before the start of their Thursday night square dancing session. The round dances are called by Cecille Lockrey. She explained that for round dancing the couples form one big circle and dance as partners. The couples are cued as ,to movement as they move in the circle. The Huron -Bruce SWingers start their square dancing program in October and go until November. There is square dancing during the summer, two weeks per month during May, June July and August.
