HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-04-29, Page 2711 'Kathy the Cow' visits LAPS Kindergarten class LCPS By Luke Cranston and Kevin Springer This week in kindergarten, the class had Ms. MacKay and her friend "Kathy the Cow" visit us and talk to us about our pets and safety around farm animals. "Kathy" has stayed with us for a few days and we enjoyed her. OPP Constable Lloyd finally came to visit the afternoon kindergarten on Fri- day. They enjoyed seeing his uniform and the inside of his police car and hearing the loud siren. Grade 1 On Tuesday, Miss MacKay visited our school to remind us all about safety around home, farm and animals. We then made some interesting safety posters. We enjoyed listening to all the good singers who are going to participate at the Music Festival. Good luck to Sean Lougheed and Shane Petteplace. Grade 1 will be cheering for you. We are busy writing our own books for the Young Author's Conference and doing lots and lots of reading. Grade 2 Grade 2 had a good Easter holiday and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Kelly Newhook got a special surprise when she won an Easter colouring contest and received a Large stuffed rabbit as her prize. Grade 2 is enjoying the computer in their room for this month. There are many good programs being started and a special thanks to Mrs. McDonagh for helping get things organized for us. In co-ordination with our spring theme, we have been conducting some plant ex- periments and anxiously awaiting the results. Grade 3 Everyone enjoyed a super Easter holi- day. On Tuesday, the farm safety consul- tant, Diane MacKay, visited our school and had many good safety tips for us. On Wednesday, Kerrie Skillen, Angie Ward, Adam Morrison, Jeremy Smith and Doug Johnston felt nervous when they were asked to sing their Festival songs for the school, but they were brave and did their best. Everyone says "good luck" next week in Walkerton. Grade 4 Grade 4 has enjoyed many special. events this week. Miss MacKay taught us about many ,fire safety rules and household hazards. Constable Lloyd visited as well. We were very proud of our choir members and our soloists at the Music Festival assembly. Katrina Abbott, Jacky Murray, Kristen O'Neill and Jessie Park will be performing at the Music Festival in Walkerton next week. Grade 5 The Grade 5 students are finishing a study on birds. The class had Mr. McKeon in to show them metric conversions. For art they made pictures with grass and flowers, leaves, pine needles, etc. The singing festival is coming up and kids are practicing for it. Grade 6 The Grade 6 class is happy to hear that Jennifer Porter placed third in her category at the county science fair. Grade 6 is making a detailed map of the school to show where all the fire alarms and fire fighting equipment is located. J: 'i:.. ,::. r:�l,/i'r?ii!::;'•% everything is in place for this week's printing. Grade 7 After an enjoyable Easter weekend, the Grade 7 class has come back to a very busy week. In addition to the Farm Safety program, the Bruce County Science Fair in Mildmay, getting ready for the Bruce County Music Festival and final prepara- tions for our three day trip to the Outdoor Education Centre next week, we did have some time to learn about interest and how it applies to our day-to-day purchases. Our research studies concerning animals of the world continues. Family Studies Grade 7 spent the day at the Nursing Home decorating Easter cookies for the residents. Coloured icing and decorating guns made it easy to create professional looking treats. Grade 8 was busy baking cakes for the draw at the Easter Assembly. Hard work and good deeds earned students raffle tickets on the cakes. The lucky class win- ners were chosen at the assembly. Primary - Wendy Hayes, Grade 1; Junior Lisa MacDonald, Grade 6; Intermediate - Betty -Ann Murray, Grade 8. The girls' basketball team did extremely well in representing LCPS at the tourna- ment finals on April 11. Our girls won two of three games and the third game they lost by only one point against Northport by a score of 16 -17. Congratulation girls on a super season and thank you for your work. Grade 8 Congratulations Jill Campbell for winn- ing third prize at the county public speak- ing finals. Well done! In addition, Grade 8 had the privilege of having two classmates represent the class at the music assembly. Mark Anderson and Karen Miller sang very well and will be competing in the Music Festival next week. Also Cailin Clarke, Jill Campbell, Peter Neufeld, Judy Lane and Tracy Ward represented out school at the County Science Fair on Thursday. Congratula- tions to all, especially to Cailin who will be representing Bruce County at the National Science Fair. We are all proud of you. Fund-raising for the Ottawa trip has been discussed and the class would like to have another bake sale, tape raffle, as well as a white elephant rummage sale. Everyone seemed enthusiastic to work hard to make a little more money. Education Week Congratulations are in order to all the Lucknow finalists who represented us so well at the County Science Fair at Mildmay. Jennifer Porter placed third in her category and Cailin Clarke placed first in hers. Cailin will also be representing Bruce County at the Canada Wide Fair in May. Please come and join our classes on Thursday or Friday and join in the celebrating of Education Week. The theme is "Come Learn with Me". Ottawa family visits Simpsons Robin and Betty Ann Davies 'and family of Ottawa spent the Easter holidays visiting with Betty Ann's parents Donald and Edith Simpson. Christopher Blaise Doherty, son of Blaise and Joanne Doherty, was baptized at St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge. Eric and Dianne Drennan and boys Matt and Wes visited with the Clete Dalton family on Sunday. They enjoyed an after- noon of fishing and horse -back riding. A large crowd of friends and neighbors met in the Lucknow Community Centre to help Mike and Debbie Courtney celebrate their wedding. Mike and Debbie were mar- ried in the Nile Church on Saturday, April 25. Congratuations! Col. Cletus Dalton of this area was one of 55 contestants at the 1987 Auctioneers KINTAIL Association of Ontario Competition held recently in Brampton. Contestants were divided into three divi- sions with the winners as follows: Novice - Richard Beer; Ladies - Alisha Gordon, Kingston; Experienced - Brian Barker, Brampton. The annual meeting of the Ontario Association of Auctioneers was held in con- junction with the competition at the Holi- day Inn in-Bramalea.
