Christmas
dinner at LOPS
Yummy, delicious! Those were the say-
ings of the people at the Lucknow Central
Christmas Dinner. The- program started
off with Mr. Pike's announcements then a
few students from Mr. Burkhart's class
sang John Apple -seed to the school and
then everyone sang it back. There were
some really neat place -mats that the
classes made for the occasion. The meal as
I said before was delicious. We had turkey,
potatoes, salads and veget
grade eights put on a short but funny play.
A thank -you goes out to Miss Matte. and
Mrs. Martin for preparing the delicious
meal. Then they gave us ice-cream and
sent us outside. Then we came in and wat-
ched some movies and had a terrific
afternoon.

Report from
the chess club
On Thursday March the fifth we had our
first chess club meeting in the pit. We were
to practice for the tournament in Ripley
and the one in Lucknow. First Mr. Pike
told us the rules and told us when we were
going to practise which is on Thursdays.
After he finished talking we began practis-
ing. Mr. Bennet who helped supervise
found that some of the kids were pretty
good. There are about fifteen kids in the
chess club. They are a fine bunch of
students and we wish them well in their
future events. On Saturday April the
fourth, six members of the chess club
represented our school in the Ripley chess
tournament. They played very good but
with their many efforts they didn't win
enough games to place in the finals. It was
an interesting day! Joel Sutton
Track and Field day
Track and Field is going to be on Thurs-
day, June 4th. This year Track and Field
will be longer than usual because the
students from Kinloss are in Lucknow
because the school was shutdown. The first
and second place winners from the 10, 11,
12, 13 and 14 year olds go onto the regional
track and field meet on June 15th in
Kincardine. Adrian Helm

The poppy
Looking at the fields,
Where wild poppies grow,
It makes me think back,
To long, long, ago.
I wasn't there,
But I can plainly see,
The war would have been,
A fearful time for me.
I now live today,
In what we call peace,
But without our brave men,
The war wouldn't have ceased.
I remember my grandpa,
Who went to fix planes,
He tells me of things,
He hopes never happen again.
Of all the dead people,
The wounded as well,
I know from these stories,
Soldiers went through hell.
I owe, oh so much,
To our brave men of war,
Who set our country free,
To let war be no more.
When I look up,
And watch poppies blow,
They remind me of horrors,
Of long, long, ago.
