Do you know the Relationship between
cucumbers and Western Canada? Little
did I know that after two weeks out west I
would spend the rest of my summer in a 20
acre cucumber patch.
The flight across Canada was exciting
and I was sure our two weeks out west
would be just as exciting. We had three
fantastic days at Expo 86, then boarded the
ferry to Nanimo where we spent three
days touring Vancouver Island. Our one
week tour was up, now we were on our own
for another week. The mountains were
breathtaking as We travelled through
British Columbia and Alberta. We made it
to Edmonton where we spent a whole day
at the West Edmonton Mall, a woman's
paradise; over 800 stores! Then it was off
to. the airport, and in a few hours we were
home, sweet home.
Boy, was my summer going great, and
with six more weeks of lazy, hazy, days
left to do the things I loved most; playing
baseball, swimming, and sleeping in. That
was where I was wrong!
A local cucumber patch needed some
workers and I was asked. I knew it would
be hard work, but the lure of all that
money, made me accept the offer.
What a way to end the summer up at 6:00
every morning, a 21/2 mile bike ride to
work, then work from 7:00 a.m. till 5:00
p.m., then bike home again. And after all
that, some' nights I even had a ball game.
Some mornings it was so -o -o -o cold I had
to wear gloves and I could even see my
breath.
One morning I was peddling along, look-
ing around, when all of a sudden I was on
the side of the road with a scraped hand,
but up I got and continued on my way to
work.,
Have you ever seen a cucumber jump?
Many a time I would pick up what I
thought was a cucumber to throw it into
the basket, but out it jumped again. Ocas-
sionally, I would lift up a vine and there to
my horror a snake would be resting !
However, the frogs and the snakes
weren't the worst part about the job it was
the bachache! After about three hours the
first day I wasn't sure if I would ever stand
straight again. I didn't think my back
would suffer as much as it did, because we
would be sitting on a rider, riding around
the field. After all that hard work sitting in
a "U" -shaped position for about 8 hours
each day, I thought all my money I would
earn would go straight to the chiropractor
to straighten my back.
Just as the bachache horror of the job
started its departure, a new one arrived.
All those cucumbers were starting to af-
fect me. Everything I saw was green,
Green chairs, green cats, green hair,
everything green. Even in my dreams I
was being attacked by cucumber vines.
But, if there are cucumbers to pick next
year, I'm sure I'll be there, because my
employers were very kind, and understan-
ding, and the other workers were fun to be
with.
Now that the job is over my dad can no
longer tease me after coming home from a
long day's work by saying "You can tell a
pickle by it's crunch and you can tell a
picker by their hunch.
But I can honestly say that picking
cucumbers really was a down-to-earth
experience! !

The circle game
About 20 years ago I came out to play. I
caught a butterfly and put it in a jar all by
myself.
When it started to storm with rumbling
thunder and flickering lightning, I was
frightened of it and wanted someone near
to protect me.
Then about 5 years later I could go
skating but I couldn't go skating by
myself.
I always asked why not but they just said
wait until you're older.
That made sense to me because I
couldn't really tie my skates tight enough
to stay on the blade.
Then about 5 years later, cartwheels and
skating didn't interest me anymore.
Instead the cartwheels turned into car -
wheels and I started to tour around the
towns with my older friends.
My parents told me to take my time
because it wouldn't be long until I got older
and my life would slow down.
Now I am 20 years old and I have lost
almost all my interests in the things I used
to love to do.
However, there will be new dreams and
better dreams before the day I die.
Easter is...
E is for Easter which .is coming soon
A is for April Showers which some of us
love
S is for summer sun shining some day
T is for Terrific Teacher teaching every
day
E is for excited kids watching coldness
pass away
R is for reaching under your favourite tree
And that's what my Easter means to me.

Where are your toes
Ate your toes away up there, dangling in
the breezy air, or are they sitting near a
bear, if there touching his brown hair are
you going to get out of there?

As the years go by I get older and I have
been captured by the rounds of time.
I can't grow younger but I can always
remember the past as I get older and live
life to it's fullest.
