Cailin Clarke, a Grade 8 student at the
Lucknow Central Public School, will par-
ticipate in the Canada -wide Science Fair
after placing first in the Environmental
Division in the Bruce County Science Fair
held in Mildmay last week.
Cailin placed first in the county -wide
competition with her project called
"Water Pollution - Who Cares?" In her
project, she examined the effects of a
variety of pollutants on 12 different eco-
systems over a seven-day period to find
out what damage could be caused.
Fifty per cent of the polluted water was
then drained and replaced with fresh
water. She then observed the changes in
the eco -systems for another 21 -days to see
if there was any recovery of the water
organisms.
However, the results were very different
than Cailin expected. She said only one of
the 12 different eco -systems recovered
from the pollution while the rest of the
water organisms had died or . were
decomposing.
The eco -systems were contained in 12
pickled jars filled with a variety of water
life used for the experiment including pond
snails, water mites, midge fly larvae and
algae.
Cailin said she received the idea for the
project last October while studying the in-
terdependance of organisms and their en-
vironments in her Science class.
The Canada -wide Science Fair will be
Science Fair
held in Mississauga from May 10 to 17.
This is the first time Cailin has advanced
to the national science fair level, although
she has won twice at the county level
science fair.

Ian Clarke of RR 5 Lucknow.
