HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-04-22, Page 7Mel Ol Draws, games of chance at Brookside's Fun Day BROOKSIDE By Jason Cameron, Adrian Rau Trisha MacDonald and Janine Helm Mrs. Young, Grade 1 Room 1, was away all week. Mrs. Cull was the teacher for this week. Some of the grade 2's put up a graph to show the results of their shoe survey. The class made butterflies and flowers to decorate their room for spring. Grade 1 Miss Mathers' Grade 1 have had a fun week. They worked at several Easter cen- tres and on Wednesday they wore their newly designed Easter bonnets when their parents joined them for an Easter Brunch. They had a great time and thanked the class for inviting them. Grade 5 Portable 1 Grade 5 students in Mrs. Worsell's class are interviewing each other to write a biography of each class member. They are studying Famous People and they have read biographical summaries of several famous people. Grade 7 Room 12 On Monday, April 13, some people in the class attended the annual basketball tour- nament. The boys played at Robertson and the girls played at Colborne. Both teams played well but we didn't manage to bring back the pennant. Most of the class is getting ready to sing "Rock Around the Clock," "Cats in the Cradle" and "Music Moves Me" in the concert. On Wednesday in Phys. Ed. they ran the track for the first time this spring. They are also learning how to play football. The Grade 7 reporters are Matthew Sproul and Rhonda Dickson. Grade 8 The Grade 8 class is busy with props and other duties, getting ready for the spring concert at the school. The concert will be held on April 29 at 8 p.m. The Grade 8 reporters are Nicole Mid- delkamp and Karen Bakker. Visitors in the school this week included Mr. Arnold Mathers, Superintendent; Mr. Tony McQuail and Mrs. S. Rathwell, trustees; Janet Bannerman, physiotherapist; Margo Clinker - Farquhar, speech consultant with Home Services. Fun Day Excitement was high at Brookside on Thursday, April 16, when the Fun Fair organized by Grade 6 was in progress. - There was a bake table, a toys and books table, several draws, and several games of chance. Classes were scheduled in at dif- ferent times during the afternoon and many happy children came out of the gym clutching "treasures" they had bought. Mr. Liddle and his Grade 6 planned this event and the proceeds will be used for school activities. Results of the draws at the Fun Fair were as follows: whole school - The Cake Draw - Linda Hayden; The Kite "Stellar Invader" - Craig Moffat. Senior draw grades 5-8; 1- pop - 2 bottles Pepsi - Melanie Wylds; 2- badminton - ten- nis set - Barb Nivins; 3 - Chocolate Bunnies - Terry Livingstone; 4 - two dollar Mac- Donald Gift Certificate; 5 - two dollar Mac- Donald Gift Certificate Elliott Bauer; 6 - watch -Warren Andrew; 7 - pop, 2 bottles orange - Bryan McCann; 8 - case of Pepsi - Nicole Middelcamp. Junior Draws: chocolate bunny - Debbi Lyn Greene; Fun in Sun Kit - Catherine Brindley; Snuggle Baum Colouring Book - Jennifer M.K.; Transformer Colouring Book - Rachel McQuail; MacDonald Cer- tificate - Michael MacGillivary; Easter Eggs - John S. Dalton; watch - Heather Alton; Candy Guess - How many candies in jar? Senior tie among Rhonda Dickson, Shane Webster and Marcie Dawson. Junior .winners; Arron Merriam, Mat- thew Sproul, Joyce McWhinney. Staff Draw - Mr. Hazlitt, who graciously shared with rest of the staff. Grade 3 Room 4, Krakatoa, has been finishing projects this week. The book group,,isput- ting the finishing touches on their very fine stories, and the spring project group is completing a variety of activities. Some people have written plays, brainstormed places to hide eggs and carried out spring animal research. For the class Easter treat, they fingerpainted with chocolate pudding (Yum! ) and then cut the dry pain- tings into rabbit shapes to make — of course! Chocolate bunnies! The reporter for Grade 3 this week is Mrs. Clarke. Guest speaker .discusses asparagus The Lucknow and District Horticultural Society met in the Legion Hall on Wednes- day, April 15. Mrs. Logan welcomed everyone to the meeting. Mrs. Blanche Needham opened the meeting with the singing of 0 Canada. The minutes were read and adopted and the correspondence was read. It included thank -you notes, information on the con- vention in- Kingston, and a $20 gift cer- tificate for the flower show in August from Dominion Seed House. Joan Robinson and Mrs. McNaughton gave reports on the District 8 convention held on April 4 in Seaforth. Committee leader Mrs. Dickie read a poem on daf- fodils from the fourth reader. Mrs. J. Conley, Mr. Dickie, Mr. Camp- OfFicers installed Twenty ladies sat down to a delicious pot -luck dinner at the annual meeting of the Lucknow Women's Institute last Tuesday. The business portion of the meeting opened with the Institute Ode and the Mary Stewart Collect. The meeting was chaired by Dorothy Brown . Jean Whitby read the minutes and the correspondence. Edna Young read a letter from the district president on farmers' problems. The members decided to place a plaque and picture in memory of the late Dr. Jack McKim in the medical centre. Grace Gibson gave her report of the district directors' meeting held in Purple Grove. The district annual meeting will be held in Belmore on May 19. Lucknow will be responsible for the devotions. Tillie Wilson and Winnifred Gammie were ap- pointed to this task. The financial report was given by Jean Whitby. The convenors' reports were bell and Mrs. Needham entertained with a couple of musical numbers. Mrs. Shields displayed her paintings, mostly of flowers, from her painting class. Mrs. Peddle gave some useful information on several favorite flowers. Mrs. Dickie introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Frank MacKenzie, who discussed growing asparagus. She told of growing and marketing asparagus and dif- ferent diseases to look for in the plant. She also handed out some recipes. Mrs. MacKenzie was thanked by Mrs. Shields. Mrs. Fern MacDonald gave a flower quiz and everyone was reminded of the May Tea' on May 20. The committee of Mrs. Dickie, Mrs. Ped- dle, Mrs. Shields and Mrs. Fern Mac- Donald served a lovely lunch. at WI meetin given and the new slate of officers were in- stalled as follows: President - Dorothy Brown; First Vice - President - Annie Shiells; Second Vice - President - Elizabeth Robinson; Secretary - Edna Young; Assistant Secretary - Tillie Wilson; Treasurer - Mabel Whitby; District Director - Grace Gibson; Alter- nate - Mary MacGillivray; Cheerio - Susan McNaughton; Pianists - Mary MacGillivray and Isabel Ritchie; Branch Directors - Mabel Whitby, Winnifred Gam- mie, and Winnie Fisher; The convenors of standing committees are as follows: Curator - Edna McDonald; Resolutions - Edna Young; Education and Cultural Activities - Elizabeth Robinson; Family and Consumer Affairs - Noma Campbell; Citizenship and World Affairs - Grace Gibson; Agriculture and Canadian Industries - Marybelle Peddle; PRO - Mary MacGillivray and Auditors - Rhoda MacKenzie and Winnifred Gammie.
