VON hires
new director
The Grey -Bruce Branch of Victorian
Order of Nurses is happy to announce that
Mrs. Becky Hollingsworth, R.N., B.Sc.N.
has been appointed Executive Director,
taking over this position from Mrs. Susan
Knape.
Mrs. Hollingsworth is a graduate of
McMaster University and brings con-
siderable experience, having worked ex-
clusively in community nursing in
Hamilton, Huron County, and lately as
Supervisor of Nursing Services and Acting
Executive Director for Grey -Bruce VON.
The local Branch has undergone
phenomenal growth over the last five
years, the fastest growth in the agency's
history. And as the trend continues for
more health care and convalescence in the
home, no doubt this growth will continue.
The Board of Management feels very con-
fident that Mrs. Hollingsworth will provide
the leadership to allow VON to continue its
high level of home nursing commitment
that our two counties have come to expect.
The year 1987 is a special one in the
history of this Canada -wide organization.
This year marks 90 years of service to
Canadians, providing appropriate health
care while allowing the, people to remain in
the familiar surroundings of their homes.
1987 also marks 50 years since the beginn-
ing of VON services in Owen Sound and the
counties of Grey and Bruce.
A special 50th Anniversary Dinner and
Dance is to be held at the Owen Sound
arena on Friday, June 5, to celebrate a
wonderful half century of steady growth
and outstanding service to this
community.

In the five years from 1976 to 1981, ( a
period marked by intensive advertising
about the benefits of physical fitness),
Statistics Canada tells us that the propor-
tion of able-bodied seniorsexercising
regularly rose from just less than 50 per-
cent to nearly 60 percent. During this
period, seniors also recorded a more im-
pressive increase in the proportion carry-
ing on regular exercise than any other age
group.
