April a busy month at Wingham Day Centre
By Gloria Workman
April started off with a bang. The
weather that we received was not exactly
what I had in mind. But we can't let that
stop us. We have alot of activities planned
for the month of April at the Wingham and
Area Day Centre for the Homebound.
Don't let the snow keep you away from the
program. It is just a tefnporary inconve-
nience that I'm sure will disappear soon.
Introductions are in order. We have
hired a part-time clerk bookkeeper. Cathy
Ritsema has joined our staff. Welcome
aboard Cathy. On Thursday April 9 we are
going to attend seniors' day at the Belmore
Maple Syrup Festival. We are looking for-
ward to our annual fill of pancakes and
sausage with "real" Maple Syrup. There
will be lots to see; craft and quilt displays.
The bus leaves the armouries at 9:45. We
are going to stop at the Teeswater
Creamery on our way back to the Centre.
It will be an action packed fun filled day. If
you would like to join us please call the day
centre at 357-1440 for more information.
On April 15, the week before Easter we
are going to have Marg and Howard
Savage show us a slide presentation of
their trip to Israel. On the 21st and the 30th
of April, Ruth Thompson a member of our
Board of Directors is going to show us
slides of Australia. We are looking forward
to some armchair travelling to the Land
Down Under.
The next foot Clinic will be April 22 from
1-3 p.m. Please call the Day Centre for an
appointment. The next Board meeting will
be April 27 from 3-5 p.m. at the Wingham
Armouries.
The Thursday program will be cancelled
April 23 to allow the Wingham Hospital
Auxiliary to set up for their Rummage
Sale that will be held on April 24.
On April 28 the Tuesday group are in-
vited to Bring a Friend who might enjoy
the program. Please let us know a week in
advance if you are going to bring someone.
The week of April 26 to May 2 marks Na-
tional Volunteers' Week. We take this time
out to -show our appreciation to the many
hours that volunteers give to us. I was
reading a book called "The Effective
Management of Volunteer Programs" by
Marlene Wilson. I was so intrigued with
the first paragraph that I wanted to share
it with you. "There is a legend in the Mid-
dle East about a spindly little sparrow ly-
ing on his back in the middle of the road. A
horseman comes by, dismounts and asks
the sparrow what he's doing lying upside
down like that. "I heard the heavens are

going to fall today" said the sparrow. The
Horseman responded, "I suppose your
spindly little legs can hold up the
heavens." "One does what one can" said
the sparrow. Volunteers working in social
services must sometimes feel like the
sparrow with spindly little legs getting
ready to hold up the heavens."
Volunteers must realize that the work
they do, adds up. The Day Centre for the
Homebound has about 60 volunteers who
contribute to the operation of the centre. In
1986 there were a total of 2,800 hours
donated to the centre (not including time
spent by the Board of Directors). That
works out to an average of 56 hours per
SPECIAL
week. Therefore, without the time and
'energy provided by our many dedicated
volunteers, we couldn't provide the quality
of program that exists today.
In appreciation the staff of the Day Cen-
tre for the Homebound would like to extend
a great big THANK -YOU!
`Faith and Light' meet recently
"Faith and Light" a community of men-
tally handicapped and friends met at their
regular first Saturdayof the month
meeting at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart
School Teeswater.
With a .great sense of friendship led by
Betty Kennedy and Diane McCormick, all
participated in action songs and fun
games. Play acting the stoning of Jesus
was very successfully done by our
"Special Friends". Rose Culliton prepared
a good lunch enjoyed by all.
The executives and board members in
their last meeting have planned trips, pic-
nics, dances and other activities. To get
the necessary funds, the Knights of Colum-
bus will hold a benefit bingo on July 4 at
the Walkerton Knights of Columbus Hall
where all friends of the mentally handicap-
ped are invited to help out. For more infor-
mation please call 357-2288.
