Ripley woman wins CKNX Music Maze
Sandra MacDonald, RR 2 Ripley, was the
grand prize winner in the Music Maze Com-
petition held during the past month by
C.K.N.X. radio station in Wingham. In this
column on Wednesday, March 25, three
weeks ago Ab. Wylds had the item that San-
dra had tried the competition on Monday
morning, March 23 and that she got the title
of one song in the five on that "Maze" - it
was "On the Road Again" - about the bird
flying out the door and away. So Sandra's
name went into the drum from which will be
made a lucky draw for a trip to Nashville in
mid April.
Last Friday, April 10 near the end of the
C.K.N.X. noon program, ,Lisa Brent of the
radio staff had the name ticket and made
the call. Allan MacDonald answered it and
Lisa asked for Sandra. In turn Allan called
his wife Sandra to the phone. We had our
radio on here - so we heard no mention about
C.K.N.X. being on the line. Sandra
answered and must have recognized Lisa's
voice. Her startled answer to Lisa was "Oh
my God" and right away Lisa said "Oh my
God what?" and Lisa continued saying
"Sandra you are going to Nashville for
Easter" - so dramatic and exciting that
C.K.N.X. had it taped and then replayed a
few times on Saturday.
So Sandra and her husband Allan Mac-
Donald are set for a four day Easter trip this
weekend, Friday to Monday to Nashville,
Tenn. Transportation is by Hanover Coach
and well known C.K.N.X. News Reporter
John Strong and his wife Mrs. Norma Strong
are the chaperons in charge with best
wishes for an enjoyable safe time.
Now a few words to identify Sandra and
Allan. We talked to her on Sat. evening just
before the T.V. hockey. She said that she
was Sandra Thompson. Her parents were
ivIr. and Mrs. Alvin Thompson. Well would
your mother be Virene. Finlayson? Yes. So
we established her identity - Virene, and her
two sisters Oral, Mrs. Murray Cameron of
Toronto, and Marilyn, Mrs. Bob Johnston of
Ripley. All three attended the Ripley
District High School, here during my
teaching time. Allan MacDonald, Sandra's
husband, no problem, he was raised on the
farm down the 6th concession - opposite S.S.
No. 5 where we attended for years before
coming to R.C.S. Now Allan and Sandra live
on the former :Calvert Finlay farm on the
12th c6ncession west with neighbours Dalton
Wardell, Ray Walden, Murray Wilson ,just

Ripley Grass Fires Fought
Both Friday and Saturday afternoons last
week the Ripley fire whistle sounded at 5:15
and around 3:30. With the sunny dry spell it
is the time for those dead grass fires. On
Friday the three vehicles went north on the
15th to the 12th corner then headed down
that road crossing Highway 21 to some place
down there known as the. Kennedy subdivi-
sion in the north west part of Huron
townships.
Residents down there helped with it.
Responding were Ripley firemen Bob
Johnston, Bill Robinson, Joe Hodgins, Ivan
Cook, Dan MacDonald, Dan Fry, Brian
Pollock, Chris Anger and Don Peterbaugh.
The trucks were back home to Ripley in the
supper hour.
On Saturday afternoon the three vehicles
headed east around the main corner. The
fire was at the front west side of the Dr. Don
Hodgins farm where some burning material
from the east side of the village had blown
starting a grass fire. No names of the
firemen were released to this reporter.

District High School 4-H Forestry Club, plus
the help of Russ Stanley and Burt Elliott of
the Huron Twp. council for a couple of hours
in the forenoon, planted 3700 trees between
9:30 and 3:30 p.m. and were soaked in the
day long drizzle.
It is regrettable that no sign was ever put
up giving the three girls, nine boys, and
leader as a 4-H chief credit for this. It is also
with :egret that Ab Wylds looks at the mile

Finlay Street at the north end of Ripley here
from Huron Street over to William Street
which could be used for tree planting for
