Don Ritchie has his hands full trying to contain the triplet calves
born at his RR 5\\Lucknow farm. The triplets (two bulls, one heifer)
arrived last Sunday night, about two weeks premature, but all are
coming along quite nicely. Apparently, the instancesof triplet
calves are very rare as this is the first time Mr. Ritchie has had
such an event happen on his farm. Two of the three calves are nam-
ed after his children Andy and Angie (shown here) with the remain-

Ashfield hires new clerk -treasurer
Linda Andrew of RR 2 Lucknow was
selected as the clerk -treasurer with 25 ap-
plications for the position filed with the
township. The selection was announced at
the township council's April meeting.
She replaces former Ashfield Township
Clerk -Treasurer Donald Simpson who
retired from the position after 33 years.
The hiring is subject to a probationary
period of six months.
Mrs. Andrew, a first-time clerk -
treasurer, says she has lots of experience
dealing with people which will be a definite
asset to the job. A graduate of the medical
secretaries course from Fanshawe Col-
lege, she has since worked at several jobs,
including working in doctor's offices in
Brussels, at the Lucknow Medical Centre,
and at the University of Guelph. She has
also worked at the Lucknow Co -Op as a
bookkeeper.
However, she says she will have to take
courses on municipal administration from
Conestoga College for the position.
She says she is definitely looking for-
ward to starting the job, which is tentative-
ly set for May 1.
"I think it's a tremendous opportunity.
I'm looking forward to it. I've just been
raising kids for the past several years. I
know a lot of people in Ashfield and I hope I
can do a good job," said Mrs. Andrew.
In other business, Don Carter of
Wingham presented- a proposal for gar-
bage collection in the township. Council
agreed to have Mr. Carter collect•garbage
from the cottages weekly from May 20 to
October 20 at a price of $4,400.
Permission was granted to Geroge Lavis
and Mervyn Lahn to install wavewall and
stone buffer at the high water mark in
front of their cottages in Port Albert.
An application for a loan under the
Shoreline Property Assistance Act from
Seymour Wigle was approved.
Ken Dunn, of B.M. Ross and Associates
of Goderich, informed council of the condi-
tion of the new culvert on Lot 3 Concession
10-11 which they are monitoring to see if
the road should be closed.
A building permit for a new house for Ar-
nold Meader on London Road in Port
Albert was approved.
Two bylaws were passed by council, ap-
pointing a fire chief and authorizing the
Lucknow and District Fire Department to
participate in County Municipal Aid.
Council agreed to support the proposal to
construct new dressing rooms at the
Lucknow Arena and to assume 25 per cent
of the costs after the funding from the
Ministry of Tourism and Recreation and
the Fund -Raising Committee is applied.
Road accounts of $12,629.07 and general
accounts of $24,025.50 were approved for
payment.
Twp. council
supports
new arena
West Wawanosh Township Council voted
to support the proposed reconstruction of
the Lucknow Arena during its meeting on
April 7.
West Wawanosh will fund the project on
a 25 per cent basis with the village of
Lucknow and the township of Kinloss and
Ashfield to a maximum of $75,000. The
township's funding will only occur after
funding has been received from the On-
tario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation
and the Arena Fund -Raising Committee.
In other business, the response from the
questionaire sent out recently to all
township residents, has indicated to coun-
cil the need for the landfill site to be open
on Saturdays only for the entire year.
Two delgations attended the council
meeting. Ray Hanna presented an applica-
tion for a building permit to council.:
Harold (Bud) Glenn and Ronald Mac-
Crostie questioned council about a road-
way into the landlocked 100 acre lot pur-
chased on 1985 by Mr. Glenn. The
municipal solicitor's advice will be sought
in regards to the legal status of both the
township and the landowner.
Councillor Rhea Hamilton -Seeger was
appointed by council to represent the
township at meetings of the Blyth and
District Community Centre Board.
Council, motioned that the tender of Ban-
nerman Contracting Ltd. be accepted to
crush and haul approximately 25,000 cubic
yards of gravel at a cost of $L79 per cubic
yard . and to stockpile at a cost of $1.20 per
cubic yard.
Council also agreed to purchase
crushing material from Johnston Bros.
(Bothwell) Ltd. from the north bank of the
pit at a cost of 54 cents per cubic yard.
Building permits were granted to W. and
E. Rutledge for a porch, S. Tilbrook for a
house, H. Errington for a snowmobile club

Fire
The Lucknow and District Fire Depart-
ment was called to two fires this week.
A barn fire on Concession 10 of Ashfield
caused $68,000 to a barn owned by Ber-
nard O'Neil of R.R. 3 Goderich. The
details of a fire at Point Clark were
unavailable at press time.

The . Lucknow UCW units held their
April meetings with all members work-
ing hard to make the upcoming Q1d-
Fashioned Tea scheduled for May. SEE
