for CN and $250 for his lawyer.
Reeve Gamble told the meeting the
township would not have to have the land
seveTed because the municipality is exempt
from the planning act. He anticipates not all
owners will want to pay the costs for acquir-
ing the land so pieces would be retained in
the township name.
In some places, where the line runs
through a gulley with a tressle, for example,
the property owner would not want to pay
close to $1,000 in costs to pintas*: the land
because it really isn't worth anything.
Reeve Gamble said in a case where there
are two abutting landowners a survey is re-
quired and he estimated the cost would be
about $300 for legal expenses and $400 for
the survey.
He said if the township proceeds to ac-
quire the land, survey and legal costs would
be divided by the number of acres acquired
and then that would be multiplied by the
acreage received by the property owner to
determine the cost to each property owner
on a pro rated basis.
Bill de Boer, R. 1, Lucknow, asked why the
transaction couldn't be kept simple. "Why
must it be complicated? (If it was) other-
wise, the big shots, lawyers and surveyors
don't make a lot of money." he said.
Mr. de Boer also commented he wonders
why the railroad is protected. "Why don't
they have to repair fences and spray
weeds?" he asked. "If we're not careful,
we're going to have a strip of wilderness
right through the township."
Evan Keith, R. 5, Lucknow, remarked
that farmers don't have to put up with weeds
on railway land adjacent to their property.
He said he put pressure on the county weed
inspector and CN paid for spraying along
the line through to Lucknow.
In response to a question about whether
farmers could get permission to fence
across the line, Lynn Courtney, R. 2, Ripley
has an agreement where CN pays for the
