from six to 12 students per session.
The students, before they are accepted
to the training centre, undergo a screening
process to discover their suitability for a
seeing -eye dog. The prospective students
are visited by one of the three trainers on
staff, with a degree of personal mobility
being one of the main factors for entrance
into the centre. The CNIB and other agen-
cies also make refferals to the centre.
However, it's not cheap to operate a cen-
tre such as this. The cost per team (stu-
dent' and jiog) for the four week period is
$6,000 ich includes' all transporation
costs for the student. Over $400,000 is need-
ed every year with one-quarter of the
funds provided by the Lions Foundation
with the remainder made up by corporate
sponsorship, says Mr. Astles, adding that
the Purina Company is one of the biggest
sponsors, not only providing financial
help, but also providing all the pet food to
the centre free of charge.
Karen Winter2 a dog trainer at the centre
for the past year, said the centre only uses
three breeds of dogs - the German
Shepherd, _ Labrador and the Golden
Retriever - as they possess the right size
and temperment as well as a willingness to
learn.
The puppies are given to the centre by

breeders who donate them at no charge to
the centre, although the centre is currently
starting a dog breeding program of its
own, but it is expected to take at least 10
years before a breeding program is firmly
established.
The pups, which arrive at 8 to 10 weeks
old, are placed into "foster homes” for up
to a year to become socialized. While some
families who take the foster dogs do
become attached to them, Ms. Winter says
the foster families are glad to help the
centre.
"For the foster family, they know the
dog has to be returned, but it's a great feel-
ing of satisfaction for them. Besides, they
can always get another foster dog," -she
said.
When the dogs are returned to the centre
after a year, they are kept in quarantine.
for 12 to 14 days to ensure no diseases are
spread to other dogs in the kennel.
Soon after, a physical assessment of the
hips and eyes is done on the dogs to ensure
they are physically able to be leader dogs.
Preliminary training is then started with
the dogs taken out onto the streets by the
trainers to ensure the dogs are not shy of
traffic noises, etc.
The students are then introduced to the
dogs. The pairings are done by size and
