Leonard and Timothy, Florence Mac-

was Mary's birthday.

pleased that they made the trip over to

Help to plant trees
Mike Hunter, president of the Ripley
Junior Farmers Club called Ab Wylds this
past week to say' the club will be helping Ian
MacEachern, in the tree transplanting pro-
ject about to be held in Huron township. Ian
points out in his recent newspaper letter -
Arbour Day in Ontario is on Sat. May 9, 1987.
Mike plans to have the Junior Farmers col-

as water containers foruse in tree planting.
Euchre party held
The fourth euchre party sponsored by the
lady directors of the Ripley Agricultural
Society was scheduled for that evening. In
charge was Isabel (Jim) Brook with the
assistance of fair secretary Sheila Mac-
Donald. They got into the third game when
the hydro went off - pitch black all over the
area - the streets, houses, rinks, everything -
a complete blackout. By Thursday morning
it was back on. The cause was said to be
downed installations in the Walkerton,
Hanover and Bervie areas..,
Thanks goes to Bettye Jack) Scott who
brought a portable light from her nearby
home over to the Huron Township hall so
they were able to end the euchre party in a
different and enjoyable way which they will
remember.
Everybody's name was put on paper slips,
placed in a hat and drawn for the prizes. The
winners were Re'ta-lrwin, Minerva Stewart,
Donalda Pollard, and Alice Gamble. There
were seven tables playing. They were of-
fered their admissions back which they
refused. Instead they all sat down and en-
joyed their lunch together and enjoyed
themselves in conversation together - one
that they will remember.
They are holding a big roast beef supper
next Wednesday evening, April 8 in the
Huron township hall. After the meal there
will be the euchre games.

Fire in Huron Township
Last Wednesday evening March 25 at 9
p.m., the night that hydro black out occur-
red, the Ripley Fire whistle sounded. The
fire was at the farm of Anthony Mulder on
the second concession of Huron township.
Talking to Anthony on Sunday eveni 1g he
was well pleased with the prompt action of
the Ripley Firemen in getting to his place
where the barn was on fire and the.home in
danger.
Ripley firefighters on the call were Bob
Johnston, Chris Anger, Jack Scott, Bill
Robinson, Ivan Cook, Blain Carruthers,
Doug Martyn, Dan MacDonald, Dan Fry,
Ed McGillivray, Brian Pollock, and Don
Peterbaugh.
Anthony had a large quantity of baled hay
in the barn - over two thousand and about
twenty-five big round bales ( huge ones) .
The house to the north of the barn was in the
direct path of the south wind. So, while the
hay burned the firefighters kept the home
cooled down. They also saved the colony
house with the hens alive in it.
They got the fire trucks back into the
Ripley FirehalI around seven on Thursday
morning, Mar. 26th. Chalk the fire up to the
blackout the night before. Anthony was get-
ting the lantern fixed for lights when the ac-
cident happened.

John C. MacDonald visited with Mr. and
