New manure storage grant
announced by OMAF
By H.E. Bellman
Agricultural Engineer
Bruce County OMAF
One of the sections of the newly revised
Ontario Soil Conservation and En-
vironmental Protection Program called
OSCEPAP II, provides grants to farmers
to encourage them to install improved
manure storage facilities. The major
thrust of this program is to assist livestock
farmers in their effort to reduce the poten-
tial to pollute nearby water sources.
Items eligible for a grant include: liquid
manure storage tanks, dry or solid manure
storage that includes some method of con-
trolling any- liquid run-off, tanks or earthen
holding ponds for run-off control, storage
covers to exclude rain and snow and/or
reduce storage odours, repairs and im-
provements to existing manure storages,
fencing around storages, permanent
transfer piping from barn to long-term
storage, etc. Paved barnyards and equip-
ment such as pumping, manure transfer,
or spreading equipment are not eligible.
Eligible costs include permits and
engineering fees, materials, labour and
equipment use ( not the farmer's) .
To qualify for a grant all storages must
have a minimum of 200 days capacity and
must meet local municipal requirements
( building permit must have been obtain-
ed.) All open storages must include per-
manent child -proof fencing unless the ,
height of the storage well above grade
meets the guidelines.
The amount of the grant under this sec-
tion of OSCEPAP II is 40% of the eligible
cost of the project up to a maximum of
$7,500 per farmer, partnership or
corporation.
Anyone interested in participating in
this program should contact his/her local
OMAF office. A project proposal form
( with supporting sketches, building permit
etc.) inust be submitted to the local office
for approval before any work is begun (no
work done without prior approval will be,
eligible for a grant.)
