Advance to finals
Lucknow Pee Wees compete
in Hanover tournament
The Lucknow Anderson Flax Peewees
spent the weekend travelling to Hanover to
participate in the Saugeen Country
Peewee Bantam Tournament. The team
played their way through five tough games
and reached the finals.
The opening round saw eight teams
divided into two divisions for round robin
play. Lucknow was placed in the harder
division with Flesherton, Hanover and
Caledonia.
Flesherton 2- Lucknow 0
Lucknow was defeated in their first
game on a fluke goal by Flesherton and a
late empty netter which put the game
away. Goalie Adam Skillen played a tight
game and turned away many shots, unfor-
tunately the offense was not able to find
the net.
This game saw only one penalty for each
team.
Lucknow 5- Hanover 2
Early Saturday saw a fired up team
come storming out at a beleaguered host
team. The Lucknow team played well
together and every player added to the vic-
tory in his own way.
Lucknow 2 - Caledonia 1
Saturday afternoon, Lucknow met the
tough skating Caledonia team which had
beat Flesherton but lost to Hanover.
The opening periods saw Lucknow
hampered by penalties and Caledonia
managed to take a one -goal lead. Lucknow
did not give up and through persistent ef-
fort and good goaltending, they were able
to take a third period lead and hold on
through heavy pressure.
Lucknow finished this section with a two
wins and a loss which was enough for first
place ahead of Hanover with one win, one
tie and one loss.
Lucknow entered the semi-final against
Barrie who had finished second in the
other division with wins over Owen Sound
and King City and a loss to Ancaster.
Lucknow 4 - Barrie 2
Lucknow took a lead only 30 seconds into
the game when Chris Stevenson beat the
Barrie goalie on a five passing play with
Issists going to Justin Murray and Dale
Priestap. This line accounted for all the
t.
scoring in this game. Late in the period
Murray put the boys up by two on a tip in.
Barrie came back on an unassisted goal
on a steal to end the period.
Murray and Priestap added insurance
markers before Barrie's big defenseman
was able to outskate the Lucknow team
and draw the opposition within two.
This game was again graced with ex-
cellent goaltending andonly three minor
penalties.
Hanover 3 Lucknow 2
This put Lucknow into the Championship
final against Hanover who had advanced
with a victory over the previously
undefeated Ancaster.
Dennis Park put Lucknow into the lead
only 14 'seconds into the game on a super
shot from the point which beat the screen-
ed goalie cleanly.' Assists went to Terry
Stanley and Priestap.
Hanover came back on a defensive lapse
with the forwards coasting back and the
defence unable to stop the Hanover squad
unassisted.
Lucknow again took the lead on the
patented scoring slip of Chris Stevenson
assisted by Murray and Priestap.
Hanover again came back on a power
play goal as Dwayne Porter was serving
two minutes for delay of game after he
pounced on a sure goal in the crease.
The final period saw a see -saw battle
that saw many unfulfilled opportunities in
a real cliff-hanger of a period that saw
Hanover finally beat Skillen in the last
minute of play. An all out effort almost
clicked in the final seconds but the clock
ran out with Hanover 3-2 winners.
Congratulations to the boys who took on
the higher level teams and showed their
true ability and drive, Chris Stevenson
won the award as Lucknow's Most
Valuable Player, and Russel Suttan won
the award as Most Sportsmanlike player.
Well done boys!
