Years ago, hockey was a fast moving, minimal checking and basically non-violent game. Penalties were taken seriously and scourned by most. There has always been a few rowdy's who seem to cause trouble but they were the minority. Today, hockey haS changed, non-violent players are soon either cut or hurt as violence dominates the game. At a local arena a few weeks ago, the tit- tle Tykes were shown their first BAD lesson in sportsmanship. A team was allowed to play with eight and nine year- olds on the team, when they were playing against 5, 6 and 7 year-olds (needless to say they won) . Is this "SPORTSMAN- SHIP" No, once again it is win at any cost! I think the Port Elgin Bears deserve a lot of credit for "giving up a shot at the trophy" to give way to their feelings of what is most important, namely the safety of the players not winning at anyone's cost! In an idealistic world, in view of the way hockey is being played today, here is what hockey, to me, should mean: H -is for the happiness of watching a game. well played, the skill of good stick- handling and passing and positions well played, not for HAVOC which now occurs. Whatever happened to "Have a good time and do your best - you remember good old- fashioned "SPORTSMANSHIP"? E -is for Excitement. Well, you are sure to find excitement at the arenas, today, but usually it is triggered by anger not the ex- hilaration of a well played game! Y -is for Yielding. Today, we feel pressured to yield to the way others are playing. Does that mean just because some other coaches and parents endorse VIOLENCE ON ICE, that we have to follow suit? The sooner non-violent teams take a stand like the Port Elgin Bears have, the sooner our hockey will be something we can all be proud of. (Not ashamed of like in the Canada -Russia game) . Let's put the true meaning of HOCKEY back into Canada's National sport! Sincerely, A concerned and loving parent, on behalf of most parents, I'm sure!' Editor's Note: The author of the letter, who wishes to leave it unsigned, mentions a hockey game involving a Tyke team us- ing over -age players and labels the prac- tice of using these players "unsport- smanlike". Other hockey programs in other towns may, in fact, have a "win at all TO costs" mentality at this age level. In Lucknow, we do have some over -age Tyke players on the team. However, as a coach of the Lucknow Tykes, I can assure the writer and the readers our motives for us- ing these over -age players are only meant to have them compete at their skill level. not as a tactic to win games and certainly not to be unsportsmanlike. A.R. Universal daycare not the answer To the Editor: Many people in Canada are concerned about the care of children when both parents are working outside the home. The Katie Cooke commission on day care has proposed that.the government set up a day care, so that all women would have access to free government -run day care institu- tions at all times. This would mean free day care for everyope - for lawyers and doctors as well as low-income women. The government is now considering this report and other submissions and will soon make a decision. Child care for mothers who feel they must have a paycheck to make ends meet is a problem that must be faced, but is universal day care the answer? We think not. As . a group who believe in equal rights for women, but not at the expense of other human rights, we feel that the government should consider the needs of children as well as the needs of women, whether work- ing in the homeor in paid employment. Love is a child's birthright. Modern psychology as well as traditional wisdom emphasizes the importance to the small child of the parents - especially the mother. The bonding that takes place bet- ween the child and the mother and father is of great importance for its emotional security and mental health. The child„ needs a great deal of tender, loving care to be healthy and happy. Some children have even died from lack of cuddling. Day care institutions can never equal good home care in this respect, even though they may sometimes be necessary, if the family is in distress, In case families need day care, We should see that it is provided by people who really love children and will look after them well. However universal day care is neither necessary nor desirable, and would im- pose an enormous tax burden on everyone. This, like other taxes, would squeeze the middle income family. It is estimated that this' program would cost at -least -$11 billion dollars per year - our whole national deficit in three years. If such a heavy tax load were added to the burden that we already carry, most families would need two incomes just to put bread, on the table, and most mothers would be therefore forced into. the job market, aS has happened in Sweden. Our organization has made some pro- posals to the government to help families who are in need of help with caring for their children. These are as follows: Families should get the benefit of any money spent on day care. 'Only needy families should be subsidized - these should receive the money directly, so that they could then choose the type of day care most suitable, whether in the home "or Turn .to page 13 3rd ersar' "0Bai1n Sale APRIL 1st to APRIL 8th Monday to Saturday 9:30 AM -6:00 P.M.
