Certified seed is the best insurance you can buy
Putting in a crop takes an enormous in-
vestment in equipment, land, fertilizer,
chemicals and labour. You can make sure
you get the most out of that investment by
using high quality seed.
Certified seed is simply the best insurance
you can get that you are planting a known
variety with guaranteed germination and
strict quality standards. Starting with Cer-
tified seed will contribute to the greatest
possible return from all other crop inputs. In
fact, a 1985 survey of Western Canada
farmers conducted by Agri Studies Inc. for
SeCan Association shows that farmers who
grow all Certified seed believe that the use
of Certified seed results in a major yield ad-
vantage over non -certified seed.
The high quality of Certified seed results
from strict growing and processing pro-
cedures. When you choose Certified seed,

you are selecting a product which has been
carefully produced by a member of the
Canadian Seed Growers' Association
(CSGA), the official certification agency in
Canada for all seed crops except. potatoes
and tree seeds. The seed is processed to
meet the requirements of the Canada Seeds
Act and Regulations and is identified by a
blue tag as proof of the best quality seed
available.
Each year, CSGA promotes March as
Good Seed Month to build stronger
awareness among farmers of the many per-
formance and economic advantages of Cer-
tified seed. Here's a look at what you get
with Certified seed:
Cleanliness -
Certified seed must meet rigid standards
of cleanliness to avoid introducing unneeded
and unwanted weed seeds common in bin -
run or poorly cleaned seed.
Seed Size
Well cleaned, Certified seed tends to have
large kernels. Research has shown that
larger kernels lead to better yields as a
result of higher seedling vigor. That little
extra yield means extra profits.
True To Variety
Certified seed is pure seed of a known
variety with characteristics which have
been evaluated in extensive field research.
Make sure you are growing the best adapted
varieties for your area to get the most from
your cropping program.
Each variety is registered (licensed) for
specific benefits of yield, straw strength,
disease resistance, maturity and so on. You
may lose those benefits by using seed that is
not true to variety or by using a sample con-
taminated by other varieties. Certified seed

is carefully produced and test -proven to
give performance you can count on.
Convenience
Do you plan to plant your own seed? If so,
it means you likely have to haul it to a seed
plant for cleaning, return it to the farm, bin
it separately, have the germination checked
and finally take it to the field. Even if you
are fortunate enough to have access to a
good cleaning facility, you still may have
seed which is not a pure variety. It is easier
to place your order for certified seed with a
local dealer and eliminate these problems.
Some seed dealers offer bulk certified
stocks for greater ease of handling and less
cost.
With the costs of equipment, herbicides
and other crop inputs at record levels, it
pays to look for new ways to improve your
return on investment.
