HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-03-18, Page 8Page 8—Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, March 18, 1987 Temptation theme of Lucknow UCS unit Unit l By Noma Campbell The March meeting for Unit 1 of the Lucknow United Church Women was held at the Sepoy apartments on March 9 with an attendance of nine members and five visitors. Mrs. Grace Gibson welcomed everyone and gave a reading. The UCW Purpose was repeated and all joined in the singing of several familiar hymns. The rollcall was answered with a Bible verse containing the word "Temptation". The minutes were read and approved and the treasurer's report was given' by Mrs. Edna MacDonald. The birthday jar was passed for three birthdays - Mrs. Jean Jardine, Mrs. Mary Loth and Mrs. Donalda Ritchie. The blanket fund was also received. Several future dates for church ac- tivities were announced and Mrs. Grace Gibson read a letter of thanks to all who helped at the Presbyterial. The Devotional part of the meeting was chaired by Mrs. Eric Hackett assisted by Mrs. Murray Henderson. March was chosen as the month of temp- tations, so many changes take place, especially in weather conditions. Mrs. Murray Henderson read an in- teresting paper and a basket of bright, red apples placed on the table led the members' thoughts to how Eve had temp- ted Adam in the Garden of Eden, the two greatest temptations being "Satan" and the "World". Mrs. Henderson read several passages of Scripture pertaining to the theme. Mrs. Eric Hackett very capably in- troduced the study on the Apostle "Peter", noted for his courage and bravery, thus Jesus called him the "Rock". The Mandate on Indians in Australia was also discussed, showing our greed af- fecting them similar to Canada's own natives. Prayer and the UCW Benediction closed. the meeting. Mrs. Gibson thanked the ladies present for the use of a beautiful, bright room and the members' owe a special thanks to Mrs. Sally Ritchie for receiving at the door and also assisting the lunch committee to serve a dainty lunch. Unit 2 By Mrs. Eldon Bradley Unit 2 met at the Pinecrest Nursing Home on Tuesday, march 3 with 17 members and three visitors present. Mrs. Russel Button presided and opened with a poem. The rollcall was answered with a Bible verse with "Friend". The minutes were read and approved and the treasurer, Mrs. Alex Hackett, gave her report. The offering was taken and dedicated by Mrs. Albert Cook. There was a collection taken for the Blanket Fund. Everyone sang Happy birthday to Reverend McFarlane. Mrs. Button reported that several quilts had been tied and three families who had lost their homes by fire had been given a quilt. Mrs. Alex Hackett and Mrs. Peter Cook volunteered to be two of the readers at the World Day of Prayer, which will be held at the Christian Reformed Church this year. Mrs. Button gave the announcements and she closed the business part of the meeting with An Old Irish Blessing. Mrs. Alex Hackett presided for the pro- gram with the theme of ."Caring". Everyone sang two verses of several familiar hymns, accompanied by Mrs. McGillivray on the piano. Mrs. Grace Campbell led in the 23rd Psalm and it was repeated in unison. Mrs. Peter Cook and Mrs. Alex Hackett gave the meditation which told about the sunset years of life. Mrs. Cook gave a prayer and Mrs. McFarlane and her daughter gave an amusing skit with about "Mrs. Wise and Mrs. Gabbys" who visited a nursing home. The skit contains a lesson learned by the two characters in the skit. Mrs. McFarlane gave a summary of the April 12-18 is National Citizenship Week in ,. Canada. It is a time to cele- brate and reflect upon the strengths and values of Canadian life — equality, diversity and community. Share in the spirit of our dynamic, multicultural society. Share in the spirit of Canada. of Yt Vit C�i�?ati. meeting CHURCH life of Fanny Crosby who had written over 100 hymns, even though she had been blind since she was six weeks old. Everyone sang one verse of one of her best loved hymns. The closing hymn was sung and Rev. McFarlane gave the Benediction. Grace was sung and the committee served refreshments and a social time was en- joyed. Several residents from the nursing home joined the UCW unit for the program and lunch. Unit 3 Unit 3 of the Lucknow UCW met at the home of Mrs. A. Lemoine with 15 members answering the rollcall on the meaning of Lent. Rev. G. McFarlane was a guest. Mrs. G. Walden welcomed all with a reading on Lent from the Upper Room. Mrs. J. Arnold and committee were in charge of the devotions and Mrs. Arnold told how Lent started. A hymn was sung and Mrs. Lemoine read a Prayer of Ap- proach and the scripture. Mrs. J.
