Lucknow Legion President George Anderson presents the Legion Tyke Tournament
Championship trophy to Belgrave captain Brent Robinson (centre), Cory Moran (left) and
Brian Marks after winning the annual tournament over Teeswater. Eight teams par-
ticipated on the tournament on March 7. ( Alan Rivett photo)
Belgrave wins tourney
Eight local Tyke teams converged on the
Lucknow Arena for the 19th annual
Lucknow Legion Tyke tournament on
March 7. The tournament produced some
good hockey action throughout the day-
long event.
Belgrave 4 Teeswater 2
The Belgrave Tykes, who defeated
Howick and Brussels to advance to the
championship finals, continued their
strong playing in the final game of the
tournament to capture the championship
trophy, with a 4-2 victory over Teeswater in
the final game.
Howick 3 Blyth 1
In the consolation final, Howick played
off against Blyth and came away with a 3-1
victory. Howick advanced to the consola-
tion finals after losing their first game to
Belgrave but rebounded against Ripley.
Blyth lost their tournament opener to
Teeswater, but came back to beat
Lucknow to enter the consolation
championship.
Ripley (Huron) 5 Lucknow 0
The Lucknow Tykes opened up the tour-
nament, playing one of the two Ripley
teams entered in the tournament. The
Ripley team were full marks for the vic-
tory with their fine display of skating
talent. However, Lucknow also played a
solid game, but were unable to break the
shutout of the Ripley goaltender.
Of special note was the fine play of
Lucknow goaltender Graeme Hunter who
stopped numerous shots throughout the
game.
Blyth 3 Lucknow 0
The Lucknow Tykes entered the consola-
tion round against a strong Blyth team,
but, again, the Lucknow team was unable
to convert scoring opportunities into goals
and were beaten 3-0 by Blyth, eliminating
the locals from the tourney.
Again, the Lucknow Tykes received a
strong performance from their goaltender
Graeme Hunter who stifled the Blyth
shooters throughout the game.
The Lucknow Tykes and the coaches
would like to thank Arena Manager Bill
Hunter and Ron Alton for all their hard
work put into organizing the tournament
and making it a success, and to the
Lucknow Lions Club for their sponsorship
of the tournament.
Special thanks to all the moms and dads
who worked behind the scenes, cooking
and serving meals for the players, acting
as scorekeepers, referreeing games, and
lots of other duties too numerous to men-
tion. Also, thanks to Mr. Cletus Dalton for
providing all the hockey players hayrides
to and from the legion. It was all very
much appreciated!
Pee Wees sink Mildmay
The Lucknow Anderson Flax Pee Wees
started their WOAA playdowns on Friday
against Mildmay. The regular season saw
Lucknow win three and tie once against
these eastern rivals. This game was no dif-
ferent as Lucknow played in their usual
hard and aggressive manner amassing
eight goals and 30 minutes in penalties.
Lucknow 8 Mildmay 3
Lucknow opened the scoring when Vice
Sticklend earned a spot in the front of th
net and poked in a perfect pass from the
corner with assists going to Brad Rhody
and Russel Sutton. Dale Priestap put
Lucknow ahead by two when he scooped up
a puck after Justin Murray fought his way
over the blueline and was dumped.
Priestap made a nice move on the defence
and beat the goalie cleanly.
Mildmay tied up the game when the
defence twice allowed the oppostiion to
move in unobstructed on goalie Adam
Skillen who had made several excellent
saves prior to the goals.
Derek Turner replaced Skillen in the net
for the second period and his teammates
helped him out by scoring three goals
within 35 seconds. Justin Murray led the
way, knocking in a rebound as he ag-
gressively followed up a Chris Stevenson
play. This was followed by Warren Andrew
who perfectly set up Adrian Rau in front of
the net. The third came on a well-placed
shot by Brad Rhody after taking a pass
from Mike Vandervelde and Terry
Stanley.
Mildmay managed to beat Turner only
once on a bouncing shot from the point
which was difficult to handle. Murray
answered this when he reeled in a Priestap
pass in front of the net and slapped it
home. Mike Vandervelde also scored when
he deflected a rebound off of Don
Cuillerier's shot from the point.
The final goal of the game was scored by
Russel Sutton who brought one in from the
circle and flipped one past the goalie.
Special congratulations to the defence
who had six points on one goal and five
assists and liad only two minutes in
penalties. Way go, Russel, Terry, Peter,
Don and Dwayne!
