Lucknow Scouts may fold
if new leader not found
If another troop leader is not found for
t e Lucknow Scouts, the long-time
ucknow organization may fold by next
ear, says the chairman of the Lucknow
roup Committee for scouting..
ccording to Mike O'Neill, says the cur-
rent Scout leader, Bruce Colwell, will step
down from the leadership role this year
because of time constraints. So far, despite
numerous attempt to find a new Scout
leader by the Group Committee, the sup-
port group for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in
Lucknow, they have yet to find a
replacement.
"Bruce Colwell has done a terrific job,
but because of business commitments, he
has indicated that next year he won't be
able to continue as the Scout leader.
"Basically, we',ve asked several people,
approached the Lions Club and the
Kinsmen Club looking for help, and we've
put an ad in the paper, but we have not
found anyone ready to commit themselves
to the Scouting program," said Mr.
O'Neill, who has been active in the area
scouting movement for the past five years.
To be a Scout leader, past experience in
the scouting movement would be a help,
but it isn't a pre -requisite for being a
leader. Mr. O'Neill says an adult with the
time to spare and who also gets along well
with young boys in the 12, 13 and 14 -year-
old age bracket is a good start.
" An interest in the development of boys
is a good start. We (the Group Committee )
can help in the training of a leader. You
have to have time available. Most people
have a great deal of time.they don't realize
they have, if it's organized right," he said.
Also a potential leader must be able to
work with the scouting program which in-
volves the teaching of a variety of skills
such as camping and canoeing.
Best of all, the leadership training for
scouts is neither a long nor involved pro-
cess, as one weekend of training during the
first year of leadership is all that's re-
quired to, earn a Woodbadge 1, the first
training course for leaders.
The Woodbadge 1 gives way to more
specialized courses in scouting as the
leader becomes "more committed as a
scout leader," says Mr. O'Neill.
Anyone wishing to become involved as a
Scout leader, contact the Group Commit-
tee Chairman Mike O'Neill at 395-5592.

power that Hydro has in surplus? I don't
think it's fair," he said, adding that the
line from London to Nanticoke will disrupt
farmland in Kent and Essex Counties.
However, he said the Foodland Hydro
Committee may be down, but its certainly
not out. He said the committee will meet
shortly to "pick up the pieces and find out
where we're going from here."
Tony McQuail, the Chairman of the
Foodland Hydro Committee, could not be
reached for comment.
According to Donna Prout, an assistant
corporate relations officer with Ontario
Hydro, the corridor through the area was
necessary to fully incorporate the
generating capacity from the BNPD into
the electrical system serving Ontario con-
sumers. The line from the BNPD would
also permit the "interchange of electrical
power" between Ontario Hydro and the
Michigan Electrical Co-ordinated System.
