With Marion Gamble at the piano, Bill Collins led the sing song followed by Reta Irwin reading the minutes which were adopted as read. Freda Collins gave the financial report and Reta dealt with the correspondence. An invitation was received to attend a Boy Scout program in the Huron Township tomorrow evening, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. Marion reported for the visiting committee and Chester Emmerton advertised our dance for Feb. 26. The card party was announced by Norval Pollock for Feb. 16, then Pres. Florence Kirkpatrick presented the past Pres. Clarence Hedley with a plaque for his two years in office. The Valentine Program was prepared by Bill Collins and Chester Emmerton who -gave the opening remarks then called on Allister MacKay and his daughter Nancy Brown, who sang several favourites with Marion at the piano ending with a solo by Nancy. Their singing was enjoyed by all. Chester had some jokes and a reading frorn a book of Charlie Parkinson, followed by a choir of 12 men who sang some old familiar songs. Then Bill Collins, dressed as Miss Valentine Cup 11, oll, entered and Chester serenaded her ith K -K -K -Katie followed by Bill singing :- Johnnyd then Chester burst the balloons which were part of Bill's make-up. This caused much laughter. Then the orchestra of Aurel Armstrong and Donald Robertson with Marion at the piano favoured with some good lively violin music. Leslie Manners surprised everyone with a humorous 'recitation and song, and Jack Scott had some riddles. Norval Stanley told some jokes, then we enjoyed some tunes by Allister on the Saxophone. The courtesies were given by Elva Lowry; and Marj. Thompson received.a gift as the birthday closest to Valentine Day. A boun- tiful lunch brought a really good program to an end. Thanks guys! . Ab, Wylds says thanks to Donalda Pollard who is the new reporter for the Happy Hearts and doing.a goad job. . Also we thank Reta 'Irwin of Ripley and Robert "Bobby" Robertson of the Tenth of Huron township for their work as farmer reporters of the Ripley Happy Hearts. Lights flickered on and off Last Thurs. Feb. 12 around 8 p.m. in Ripley and area the hydro started flicking ,out then back on. We carried the flash lantern around in the house here for light after a few of these alternate spells of light and darkness, and shut the hydro switches off. The same light and dark game was on down the street. It was wierd. The village would be blacked out no lights on the streets or in the houses - no television. Finally got the battery radio on and listen- ed to the 10 o'clock news on it. ,,,We kept on listening to the battery radio -to 11:30 - no report still on a hydro break. Before crawl- ing into bed we looked out the window towards the Grain Elevator - clear sky there. Then we . looked towards George McLean's store' - in a south direction from here. There was a big white cloud reaching up like a wall - so that was it - a storm there. We crawled into bed. Next morning (Friday) we testedthe lights and the hydro was on O.K. but the electric clocks were about an hour and a half slow. Still no report on C.K.N.X. on the weather reports as to what had happened on Thursday evening. When Don Fraser came to C,K.N.X at noon on Friday to M.C. the show, the first thing he reported was the storm he en- countered the night before between Durham and Walkerton on his return. Apparently that storm passed south of here travelling in a north east direction and was causing some of the hydro lines to short in the winds. Card party held There were eleven tables of cards at the Agricultural Society card party on Feb. 11. The winners were high lady Marion Gam- ble, low lady Minerva Stewart, high . man Perrin Lowry and low man Rev. Nugent. There will be another card party on Feb. 25, 1987 in the Township Hall at 8 p.m. Thanks to Helen Irwin for this report. Helen . Irwin of Ripley and Susan VanSickle of 2nd concession east in Huron twp are the direc- tors in charge. Winter Carnival card party Results of the Euchre held at the Ripley Huron Community Centre in connection with the Winter Carnival on last Saturday afternoon were good, with eight tables play- ing. Prizes were in keeping with Valentine's Day, and the games were managed by Katherine Collins and Marjorie Thompson. Prize winners were Isabel Brooks, Florence Kirkpatrick, Harvie Thompson and Ron . Cornish, , Winnersof most lone hands were Margeret Scott and Sadie McLeod. A lucky draw was won by Donalda McLean and the birthday closest to St. Valentine's Day was that of Ernie Roe. Top conservatory graduates shown. On Tuesday evening last week Feb. 10, 1987 there was a special program on the weekly Fifth Estate program on C.K.N.X, TV. It was to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Conservatory of Music Building on Bloor Street in Toronto with its teaching staff both there and in their summer spread across Canada when either as individuals or in small groups they do numbers, explain and demonstrate, and listen to anyone who might want to attend. They do this on a pre- arranged schedule. Pictures were shown of their three top graduates. They were Lois Marshall, Glen Gould And Jon Vickers. Jon was born at Prince Albert in Saskat- chewan. He has sung on the stages of the great opera houses around the world. And also right here in Ripley at St. Andrews United Church Sunday morning service a few summers ago. He, his wife and their family were in Ripley for a holiday at the time. Also, we should mention that Jon, his wife, the former Hetty Outerbridge, and their family lived in the Bernhardt house (the one west of the old SS No 10 or Ripley Public School) for some time. Hetty's parents were Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Leonard Outerbridge. Mrs. Outerbridge was Tena Martyn and she was the principal of the Ripley Continuation School when we started in R.C.S. First Form back in 1923, so Mrs. Jon Vickers has relatives through this area - Kincardine, Point Clark, and Ripley.• Belgian team' out for carnival Last Saturday Feb'. 14 - Valentine Day was great weather wise for - the Ripley Huron Winter Carnival - bright sunshine and calm. Then the jingling of the bells added a festival sound to the outdoors. Jack Ait- chison of the 12th concession west in Huron township had his two Belgian horse teams fitted out with their show harness and wagons. On the wagons were bales of hay for the children's seats. Jack drove one team and his father Jim of Lucknow drove the 2nd team. Helping . were son Doug Aitchison, Bill Wyld of Ripley and Wayne Kerr of the South line. SMS meet at Huron Villa The Knox Presbyterian afternoon Women's Missionary Society met at Huron Villa for its February meeting, with Mrs. Nugent as hostess. President Mrs. Adeline Hackettopened the meeting with words of welcome and an. Article on Love. The minutes read and adopted were read. The roll call, a verse on Love, was answered by 13 members. Mrs. Hackett reported on the Presbyterial Annual meeting at Wingham in January. There was three members from each of the afternoon and evening groups present. .The members reported 18 visits to sick and shut-ins on the last month. Reports from the Treasurer, Student -Bursary and Friend- ship and Service committees were given. Birthday cards were signed for • Mrs. MacKay and Mrs. Stilling also a get well card for Jenny MacLean who is not feeling as well as one would like. Bette MacLeod had the 2nd session of the study book on Nepal. There are 12 million Hindus in Nepal. It is recorded that Chris- tianity entered Nepal in 1951 and at present. Mary Nichol is a missionary there. We should appreciate our freedom of religion as we have it in our country said Mrs. MacLeod. As usual she gave an informative and interesting paper on Nepal. She finished with a prayer for these people who need so much. Mrs. MacDonald and Mrs. Hackett served a lunch and a social time was spent.
