Voice for Life group meets
Eleven board members attended the
February meeting of Voice for Life.
The main topic of discussion revolved
around Dr. Marion Powell's proposal that
the province of Ontario set up twelyt
legalized abortion clinics. This, of course,
would make abortion more accessible. ( A
few months ago Murray Elston, Minister
of Health, appointed Dr. Powell to look at
how the province of Ontario could provide
better acceks to abortion. )
Group members were strongly opposed
to this proposal. Already the situation in
Ontario is shameful. (27,325 abortions in
Ontario in 1985 — the most recent statistics
Canada figures) .
Obviously the law is being vastly
violated. The 1969 amendments to the
Criminal Code decriminalized abortion on-
ly under strict circumstances — when the
life or health of the mother is threatened.
The group will call upon its 500 members
and all Christians to voice their opposition
to Dr. Powell's proposal.
Memberships for 1987 are now due.
Membership chairperson, Joan van den
Assem, reported a number of new
members this year.
The annual dinner meeting will be held
— at St -:—Andrew's Presbyterian Church on
Wednesday, April 29.
Members were encouraged to attend the
regional meeting of Region 2 of the
Southwestern Ontario Pro -Life Groups on
Feb. 21 at the Hartley House in Walkerton.
At that time further strategies will be
discussed. Region 2 consists of Wingham,
Goderich, Kincardine, Port Elgin,
Listowel, Walkerton, Hanover, Coll-
ingwood and Barrie Pro -Life groups. Reg-
gie Weidinger from Cambridge Right to
Life will be the guest speaker.
Members were encouraged to make
plans to attend the all -Ontario pro-life con-
ference at the Hampton Court Hotel in
London as well. This conference . 1 be
held on March 27 and 28. Topics for ddii. cus-
hion will be abortion, Teen Aid and
euthanasia. °
Traffic accidents on the decline
OPP Commissioner Archie Ferguson
reports a marked reduction in traffic
deaths, injuries and motor vehicle ac-
cidents in OPP policing jurisdictions dur-
ing 1986 as compared to 1985.
The number of people who died in traffic
accidents in OPP patrolled areas fell from
769 in 1985 to 705 last year, a total of 64
fewer deaths.
As well, the number of personal injury
accidents dropped, with 1,013 less people
injured. There were over 2,500 fewer ac-
cidents in total during 1986.

According to Transport Cana.na
estimates for 1985, this reduction in deaths
and injuries represents an almost $20.0
million savings in both direct and social
costs to the people of Ontario.
Commissioner Ferguson said "we feel
our increased enforcement programs, par-
ticularly `Strict Is Fair', contributed
greatly to last year's decrease in traffic
deaths".. The Commissioner also .noted
that the motoring public of Ontario is now
directly benefitting from these OPP traffic
enforcement methods, which continue to
reduce traffic fatalities and injuries.
