Parentingfocus of meeting
The Lucknow Junior Women's Institute
met on Tuesday, February 10 in the Town
Hall. Vice-president Deanna Reavie
presided.
Members were invited to the 90th an-
niversary celebration of the Women's In-
stitutes of Ontario. This will be held in
North Bay on July 6 to 9. Part of the
celebration includes a craft competition
sponsored by Hands Magazine, where an
original design must be crafted. Copies of
"The Enthusiast", the Junior Institute
newsletter, were distributed to all
members.
In April, a work meeting will be held to
tie quilts. It was decided to donate $50 to
Ronald McDonald House in London. A
donation will also be made to the upcoming
Easter Seal Telethon. Mary Nelson and
Donna Arnold will investigate whether the
institute can help to meet any needs at the
Lucknow Medical Centre and will report in
March. Next month, the guest speaker will
be Constable Lloyd, the Community Ser-
vices Officer from Walkerton. He will
discuss such topics as drinking and driving
and theft proofing.
Ruth Ritchie then introduced to the
members and guests, Lorraine Brophy
who talked about some of her ideas and ex-
periences of parenting. She and her hus-
band have been involved in fostering
children of all ages since early in their
marriage. They also have three natural
children and two adopted children.
Some influences she felt were most im-
portant in children's lives are home en-
vironment, friends, the school and the
community. She believes the STEP pro-
gram (Systematic Training for Effective
Parenting) as well as . Family and
Children's Services have been very helpful
to them. She felt that, although it is impor-
tant to encourage each individual child's
talents through various activities, it is also
necessary to have some family time, when
everyone would be home together.
Ruth Ritchie thanked Lorraine and
discussion continued through lunch.
