Interclub competition to involve Lucknow skaters
People in the Seaforth and surrounding
area will have the opportunity shortly to see
amatuer skating at its best.
On Sunday, March 1, the Seaforth and
District Community Centres will be the
location of an Interclub skating competition,
for skaters in the northern district of
Southwestern Ontario.
Approximately 150 skaters of all ages,
from the communities of Goderich, Clinton,
Blyth, Mitchell, Monkton, Lucknow,
Brussels, Wingham, Listowel, Milverton,
Strathroy, St. Marys and Seaforth will par-
ticipate in a full day of competition. The
competition is an annual event set up to
develop the talent of area skaters and to
give them the opportunity to compete
against skaters from outside their own
community.
Winners will receive medals, trophies and
ribbons as well as the chance to go on to the
regionals, then to Skate Canada, if they are
good enough.
"The Interclub is just a stepping stone,"
said Ken Rodney, who along with a number
of others, sits on the Seaforth Figure
Skating committee.
"It's just a part of the chain that takes you
all the way to the top."
Some of the categories of competition in-
clude; Interpretative Free Skating, where
the creativity of the skater is tested when
they are asked to skate to a piece of music
they have never heard before; Prepared
Solo Free Skating, for those from Junior
Bronze to Senior Silver level of skating and
Ice Dancing, for those from Preliminary to
Senior Silver level.
Mr. Rodney added that spectators from
all the communities are invited to come out
and watch the competition, which will begin
at 7 a.m. and run until 11 p.m. The younger
children will be competing in the morning,
with the seniors set to begin at approximate-
ly 6:30 p.m.
"Some of the people who have come out of
these competitions have included Kevin
Wheeler of Brussels, Lloyd Eisler and
Laurie Byer, and more recently Peter
McDonald, of Brussels and Kerry Shepherd
of Blyth. They won the senior trophy for ice
dancing in Mitchell last year, then went on
to place well in the Canadian Novice cham-
pionships. So, there'll be some good
skating."
"The act may be a little more polished at
SPORTS
a higher level of competition, but the talent
is still there, he added.
There will be no admission charge to the
competition but a silver donation will be ac-
cepted. There will be food and beverages on
sale, as well as skating mementos and
memorabilia.
