The Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-02-11, Page 19Cambridge woman dies at 97 Gertrude Emily Hockley The death of Gertrude Emily Hockley of ( Preston) Cambridge, Ontario, occurred at the Golden Years Nursing Home on February 1, 1987, in her 97th year. She was born in Lyndhurst Hants Coun- ty, on October 11, 1890, a daughter of Caroline Emily Freeman and Herbert James Tanner. On March 30, 1912 she married Tom Hockley at Alresford Hants, England. The newlyweds planned a honeymoon trip to Canada on the maiden voyage of the Titanic but were unable to book passage as the ship was overloaded. The Hockleys took the "sister" ship, Estonia, which sail- ed on April 14, 1912 and docked in Portland, Maine. Here, they were told of the tragedy that had befallen the Titanic. They travell- ed by rail to London, Ontario, then came to Bruce County. Their attempts to return to England were hampered by the First and Second World Wars. Their honeymoon spread to living their life in a new homeland, for neither had ever returned to the country of their birth. They farmed near Langside, then lived in Kincardine and in 1939 they moved to (Preston) Cam- bridge. They had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1972. Mrs. Hockley is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bert (Florence) Caskinette of Kincardine and Mrs. Russell (Elsie) Moore of Preston;, eight grand- children, 14 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild and one sister, Daisy Gammack in Scotland. Mrs. Hockley was predecased by her husband Tom in 1972; two daughters, Mrs. Elmo (Greta) Pritchard of Lucknow in 1939 and Mrs. Lea (Pearl) Meyers of British Columbia in 1974; three sisters, Mrs. William (Elsie) Jackson of Goderich in 1986, Mrs. Dorothy Appleby in 1942 and Mrs. Edith Gammack in 1977 both of Scotland; one brother, Herbert Tanner in Ontario. A private funeral service was held on February 2, 1987 at Barthel -Stager Funeral Home, Cambridge. Spring inter- ment will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Lucknow, Ontario. 4-H'ers "Surviving With Style" by Theresa Stanley The first meeting of the Purple Grove 4-H club was held on January 28, 1987. This club is called "Surviving With Style". The meeting opened with the 4-H Pledge, writing out membership cards and rollcall. The club started out with meeting three, oddly enough, because a guest speakevill attend to talk to the club. The meeting three rollcall was to tell of one decision you had made that day. Mrs. Brenda Bridge and Mrs. Shirley MacDonald divided the members into three groups, with each group having a dif- ferent activity to do. Each group had the chance to participate in the three different activities. One activity was to make whatever you could out of four elastics, four plastic cups, a paper plate, a piece of construction paper, two balloons, a piece of string and a paper bag. All groups had a creation that resembled a face or person. After displaying these creations, elec- tions were held for president and vice- president. Joyce Lane was nominated by Jenny Collins, seconded by Mary Downey; Jenny Collins nominated by Andrew MacDonald, seconded by Theresa Stanley and Sheena MacDonald nominated by Angela Collins, seconded by Peggy Stewart. Theresa Stanley volunteered to do the secretarial -press reporter duties. . Andrew MacDonald closed the nomina- tions and Joyce Lane seconded it. The secretary then read a thank -you note from Mrs. Bridge for the gift the club had sent when her baby was born in November. The meeting closed with the 4-11 motto.
