Gertrude Emily Hockley
The death of Gertrude Emily Hockley of
( Preston) Cambridge, Ontario, occurred
at the Golden Years Nursing Home on
February 1, 1987, in her 97th year.
She was born in Lyndhurst Hants Coun-
ty, on October 11, 1890, a daughter of
Caroline Emily Freeman and Herbert
James Tanner.
On March 30, 1912 she married Tom
Hockley at Alresford Hants, England. The
newlyweds planned a honeymoon trip to
Canada on the maiden voyage of the
Titanic but were unable to book passage as
the ship was overloaded. The Hockleys
took the "sister" ship, Estonia, which sail-
ed on April 14, 1912 and docked in Portland,
Maine. Here, they were told of the tragedy
that had befallen the Titanic. They travell-
ed by rail to London, Ontario, then came to
Bruce County. Their attempts to return to
England were hampered by the First and
Second World Wars. Their honeymoon
spread to living their life in a new
homeland, for neither had ever returned to
the country of their birth. They farmed
near Langside, then lived in Kincardine
and in 1939 they moved to (Preston) Cam-
bridge. They had celebrated their 60th
wedding anniversary in 1972.
Mrs. Hockley is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Bert (Florence)
Caskinette of Kincardine and Mrs. Russell
(Elsie) Moore of Preston;, eight grand-
children, 14 great grandchildren, one
great, great grandchild and one sister,
Daisy Gammack in Scotland.
Mrs. Hockley was predecased by her
husband Tom in 1972; two daughters, Mrs.
Elmo (Greta) Pritchard of Lucknow in
1939 and Mrs. Lea (Pearl) Meyers of
British Columbia in 1974; three sisters,
Mrs. William (Elsie) Jackson of Goderich
in 1986, Mrs. Dorothy Appleby in 1942 and
Mrs. Edith Gammack in 1977 both of
Scotland; one brother, Herbert Tanner in
Ontario.
A private funeral service was held on
February 2, 1987 at Barthel -Stager
Funeral Home, Cambridge. Spring inter-
ment will be in Greenhill Cemetery,
Lucknow, Ontario.
4-H'ers "Surviving With Style"
by Theresa Stanley
The first meeting of the Purple Grove
4-H club was held on January 28, 1987. This
club is called "Surviving With Style".
The meeting opened with the 4-H Pledge,
writing out membership cards and
rollcall.
The club started out with meeting three,
oddly enough, because a guest speakevill
attend to talk to the club.
The meeting three rollcall was to tell of
one decision you had made that day.
Mrs. Brenda Bridge and Mrs. Shirley
MacDonald divided the members into
three groups, with each group having a dif-
ferent activity to do. Each group had the
chance to participate in the three different
activities.
One activity was to make whatever you
could out of four elastics, four plastic cups,
a paper plate, a piece of construction
paper, two balloons, a piece of string and a
paper bag. All groups had a creation that
resembled a face or person.
After displaying these creations, elec-
tions were held for president and vice-
president.
Joyce Lane was nominated by Jenny
Collins, seconded by Mary Downey; Jenny
Collins nominated by Andrew MacDonald,
seconded by Theresa Stanley and Sheena
MacDonald nominated by Angela Collins,
seconded by Peggy Stewart.
Theresa Stanley volunteered to do the
secretarial -press reporter duties.
. Andrew MacDonald closed the nomina-
tions and Joyce Lane seconded it.
The secretary then read a thank -you
note from Mrs. Bridge for the gift the club
had sent when her baby was born in
November.
The meeting closed with the 4-11 motto.
