They have also been working on their number facts up to 15. The students have also become busy space explorers learning interesting, facts about the sun, the moon and the nine planets. Grade 6 Room 7 Mrs. Tebbutt's Grade 6 class has recent- ly completed a research assignment on animal coverings. They started their assignment in the library under Mrs. Blake's guidance. The students brainstormed ideas, gathered information and organized all the information. They completed the assignment under the supervision of Mrs. Tebbutt and the results are now display . d in the senior hall. Con- gratulations on a great research job, Grade 6! Grade 4 Room 9 Mrs. Scott's Grade 4 class is studying fruits. The class is doing research ( Take 45) in the library on fruits. The students also brought white things from home and made snow pictures. The Knitting Club has started in the class. The members have to make a scarf and a pair of slippers to get their ` ickers for the awards diploma. The lass wishes Jamey Snow a happy 10th bi thday. They thank Mrs. McQuail and Mrs. Logtenberg for helping them to write alphabet poetry. Mrs. Logtenberg also helped with Pay Day. Grade 1-2 Room 1 Mrs. Young's Grade 1-2 has started an "All About Me" unit. This week is all about Melanie Nicholson. They read stories and see films about families and talk about their own families too. The Grade 1 group has jsut started then"next reader and the Grade 2 group is finishing up their money" unit. Grade 5 Portable 2 So many games! Mr. Culp's Grade 4-5 class has been en- joying some educational games such as the catalogue match -up game. In this game you try to find someone who has the same item as you have from either the 1986 catalogue or the 1976 catalogue. Once you've found your partner you subtract the 1976 price from the 1986 price and the first pair to get it right WINS! ! Reporters for the Grade 5 class are Dianne Ross and Tanya MacInnes. They measured to find how tall everyone in their room is. Peter Adams is their tallest student at 133 cm and Lindsay Irvin is their shortest student at 106 cm. Last week, Kindergarten 1 students were learning their phone numbers, ad- dresses, and birthdays. They were really excited about skating on Friday, January 23, but it was cancelled on account of the storm. They have to wait until February 6. The students have brought pictures of themselves and. their families whch are now displayed in a very interesting album. Grade 3 Room 4 Krakatoa made snowballs to eat! On January 29, the class went snowshoeing. The class is also making Quinshees which is a kind of snow.house. Each table worked together to make a snow pile. Tomorrow they hope to hollow them out so they can sit in them. They also did an ice cube .experi- ment. The class tried to see if ice cubes could be "insulated" to keep them from melting. Six ice cubes lasted all day. The reporters fro Krakatoa are Debbie Ross and Sara Cameron. Marionette Workshop This West Region Enrichment Workshop was planned for student: , from Grades 3 and 4 with artistic talent: and an interest in creative drama. Three to five students were chosen from Colborne, Holmesville, Robertson, Victoria and Brookside schools. . Thestudents were to make a marionette and then form groups to produce and pre- sent a play using the puppets. The workshop was planned by Mrs. D. Graham and assisted by W. Robinson, L. Sygrove and S. Clarke. Volunteers who helped out greatly were Michelle Brindley, Lirida Culbert, Joan Black, Brenda Wylds, Alice McDowell, Marie Webster, Mrs. Bleeker• and Mrs. Tucker: A sincere thank -you to each of these ladies! Each child attending had a marionette to take home and the consensus was that it was an enjoyable and worthwhile workshop. Intended for last week Grade 1 Room 5 has just just finished their second reader and have been busy discussing a timely topic - winter. They have learned all the subtraction facts to five. Wow, they've had a busy New Year! Grade 3 Room �0 Mrs. Ottewell's Grade 3 has started an individualized spelling program. The class also did silhouette art and used attractive colors. 0 Many children finished the weaving taught by Mrs. Graham; and Mrs. Ottewell took pictures of the class. Shannon Cranston taugl the class how to make paper doll chains. Grade 3 reporters are Heather Robinson and Melissa Daer. Grade 3 Room 4 Room 4, Krakatoa, has been examining snowflakes with magnifying glasses, and creating some of their own for their "Cold H2O" scrapbook. They have also con- tinued with winter centre activities in- cluding some creative , thinking: "Re- arrange your face so your nose won't get cold" or "List 10 things you could not do without snow." Several games are being used for learn- ing. They've all learned how to play "99". and several students are learning how to play chess. This week the class is "in- troducing" Nathan Durnin. Grade 5 Portable 1 Mrs. Worsell's Grade 5 class has started a study of dictionary skills with Mrs. Blake in the library. They are also working on their speeches which will begin on February 4 with the school contest on February 12, Grade 4-5 Portable 2 Novels, novels, novels! Lots of novels ! Mr. Culp's class is reading, reading, reading ! They have been reading novels of all kinds. Some of the novels are called Kate, Grandpa and Me, and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. Reading novels is filling up the pupil's spare time. It's fun!
