Burns attacked by church
• from page 5
and enjoyed by everyone. The clergy
resented having their influence with their
parishoners undermined.
To make matters worse, Burns respond-
ed to clerical attacks with scathing satires,
such as The Holy Fair and Holy Willie's
Prayer. These poems have been given high
praise by several commentators. John
Buchan,. the Scottish writer who became
our Governor-General as Lord
Tweedsmuir, described Burns as a great
church reformer "who flashed the lantern
of satire into many a foul corner." Earlier,
Ralph Waldo Emerson claimed that "not
even Luther struck more telling blows
against false theology than this great
singer."
Unfortunately, it was the hypocrites who
had the last word. Within two years of
Burns's death, a Dumfries clergyman,
James Currie, published a biography in
which he alleged that Burns had died of
"alcoholic poisoning," adding: "He who
suffers the pollution of inebriation, how
shall he escape other pollutants?"
Dr. Currie 'also claimed that Burns died
in abject poverty, and he promised that the
proceeds of his biography would go -"to
help the unfortunate widow and her
children."
These were malicious lies. The medical
evidence is that Burns died from endocar-
ditis, the consequence of an attack of
rheumatic fever he had suffered as a child.
And none of the proceeds of Currie's book
ever went to the widow, who did not need
the money anyway. But the sinister
charges laid against Burns brought much
pain to the grieving family.
Burns in 1788 had married Jean Armour,
the "bonnie Jean" of more than 100 of his
romantic songs. The marriage had follow-
ed the publication of his second collection
of poems and his appontment as an ex-
ciseman at Dumfries - an appointment
which, he wrote tofriend, "gives me
satisfactory rernunergtion for undeman-
ding duties, with a provision for widow and
orphans which, you will allow, is no bad
settlement for a poet."
In his brief life 'span of 37 years, Burns
left a body of work that is cherished not on-
ly in his native land but around the world.
his weekend his name will be toasted in
ci 'es and countries that were not even
named when he was alive. His songs are
being sung wherever people gather, extoll-
ing the importance of love, of friendship, of
joining hands with each other in kindliness
and good spirits.
This would have pleased Burns, whose
generous heart had " responded to the
slogans of the French Revolution, "Liber-
ty, Equality and Fraternity." He later
became disillusioned and, two years
before he died, he became an officer in the
local militia, prepared to fight should
France try to export its revolution to Bri-
tain. He was given a military funeral and
buried in St. Michael's Churchyard in
Dumfries, on July 24, 1976.

An open Letter to Sean Conway, Minister of rf n
Education and to the Bruce County Board
of 'Education.
Dear Sir:
As members of the Reids' Corners
branch, Federated Women's Institutes of
Ontario, we are concerned about the quali-
ty of the competitive material being shown
at area school fairs. The entries are sup-
posed to represent the best efforts of the
pupils; but much of the work is second
rate.
In many cases penmanship is illegible
without any uniformity in slant, style or
letter formation. Words are misspelled
although the writing was copied from a
printed source.' Sentence structure is poor
and ungrammatical. Punctuation is incor-
rect or non existent.
Many of today's students are incapble
of writing a sentence so cannot com-
municate in a clear and concise manner.
We would urge you to prescribe that
much more time and expertise should be
devoted to the teaching of language basics.
Moreover, we feel that teachers should
