Christmas in 1941 Christmas
I wonder what it was like at
Christmas 50 years ago?
I. think that it was fun and I' think
that they got homemade toy soldiers
and toy guns.
They decorated the tree and put
candles and homemade decorations
like popcorn strings and special
ornaments on the branches.
They had no cars so they
travelled by horse and sleigh.
I think it would be fun to
celebrate Christmas in Christmas
past.
Jeff Havens, Grade 5, LCPS
Long time ago on Christmas eve
From the doorsteps of inns they had
to leave
The inns were too full for them to
stay,
And that's why Jesus had to step
on the hay.
One day this baby died for you and
me
So from our sins we could be free
And don't forget that Jesus will
always be the reason
For celebrating this happy Christ-
maS season.

lucky to have such a beautifully
decorated tree, they were all sitting
• deep in. thought. Some tears rolled
down the sad faces of most of the
family membOrs. They were
remembering the happy Christmases
that they had when their father and
two older brothers had been with
them, But they had chosen to go to
war to defend the people who were
cruelly being oppressed in Europe.
They were glad that the three men
had been willing to give their lives
for freedom, but it was so sad to
have them gone.
The few presents under the tree
waited patiently to be unwrapped,.
and finally the time came. Shouts
of exclamation were heard when the
children unwrapped their gifts. Each
of them had gotten five juicy, ripe
oranges, and the girls, beautiful
dolls. The boys had gotten
colorfully, painted, carved wooden
toys and trains. The boys wanted to.
go sledding, and so they went out-
slide. But when _they .,.got._to....their"
'sled, they saw a brand new, beauti-
fully carved, sleek toboggan.
Then came the last, and byfar the
best present of all. A booming
voice came from the doorway of
the house, asking the boys if they
laced their . new sled, Could . that
be...? Could that be father? Yesllblt
was! They ran to him and hugged
him and kissed MM. And their two
brothers were there toot!
So that's why they had gotten
such beautiful gifts! After father
had told all of his war stories, they
all went for a very fun ride through
the woods on their sleigh laughing
and carolling the whole way.
