Marg MacPherson is the owner/operator of this latest es- tablishment to join the downtown core area. As the business name implies, the inventory of the store is based on crafts. Marg became a craft person many years ago, "when I was a kid", she said. During her time of living out west, Marg expanded on her craft abilities by learning pottery and subsequently . teaching pottery clas- ses. When she moved back to Luck - now, full time employment was obtained. As a single parent of a disabled child, Marg found the job too ..demanding. At ..this .-point- she- - decided she must find some type of work which would provide her with an income, but also enable her to be at home. This worked to a degree, particularly the flexible schedule she was able to maintain. Marg first started out by touring the craft show scene where her merchandise was offered for sale. The next step was doing business out of her own home. While this worked, Marg felt she was missing out on the walk-in=trade having a store front provides. (Pat Livingston photo) There are many forms of wife assault When most of us think of wife assault, the image of a battered woman usually comes to mind. Slaps, kicks or punches are easily identified as wife assault. But what about the women whose spouse threatens, insults and humiliates her? What about the woman whose husband yells that she's stupid and incompetent because he doesn't like what she's made for dinner? Or the woman who is constantly told she's ugly? Or the woman whose boy- friend accuses her of being lazy because her job doesn't bring in enough money? Or the woman whose partners destroys her favour- ite belongings or keepsakes? Psychologists say these women are as much victims of wife assault as women who are beaten. Violence against women can be perpetrated' in other ways than through obvious physical attacks. Psychological abuse, as' threats and insults are often called, is a widespread and damaging form of wife assault. But what is psychological abuse? If you can't see it and it leaves no marks, why is it so damaging? Some counsellors who work with abused women . compare them to kidnap victims or hostages. Long- term psychological abuse, they believe, destroys a woman's self- esteem elfesteem so completely that she finds it very difficult to leave an abusive situation. An abused woman may come to identify with her abuser. She begins to believe his derogatory commantsd In time, she becomes convinced that she deserves the, abuse because of her alleged shortomings. Psychological abuse takes many forms. It can wear a woman down, intimidate her and control her behaviour. Counsellors of abused women have noted some unpleas- ant, but not uncommon, examples of psychological abuse: 'making violent threats against a woman, her children, other family members, even against her pets. 'threats of deportation, if she is under her partner's sponsorship. 'forcing a woman to do degrading things -- licking the dishes clean, cutting up .a favourite dress or washing her mouth out with soap. •verbally attacking her personality, attitudes or beliefs or belittling any efforts she makes to better herself. "cont tilting her tivities, diaupting her routines, depriving her of food, sleep, affection or money, isolating her from family or friends. Psychological abuse can demoralize or terrorize a woman because it is usually unpredictable, The abuser doesn't always follow through with his threats. Consequently, an abused woman lives in fear and uncer- tainty, not 'knowing if her partner plans to physically harm her or her children. Psychological abuse can rob her of her ability to think clear- ly. Through November, the Ontario government is conducting a public education campaign aimed at changing the attitudes that allow wife assault -- in all its forms -- to continue. The campaign includes a new television commercial which carries the message that the invisible scars of emotional abuse can be just as painful as a physical assault. Women who are psychologically abused are victims ;of wife assault. But there is help available.
