Job as interim• leader does
not give Elston advantage
from page 1
to spur the debate in our party
towards ensuring strength and pur-
pose in the party.
Elston's wife, Trudy, and
children, Jeannine, Erin,Jim,. Gil-
lian and Sean, listened as he an-
nounced his candidacy.
• He said he was overwhelmed by
the number of people who called,
urging him to run in the past week.
• As for some people thinking that
his job as interim leader may have
given him an unfair advantage over
the other candidates, Elston said his
running mates have had the ad-
vantage of "many months of or-
ganization and cassp8ign
preparation."
As of Friday, Elston had no of
ficial campaign manager, and no
slick advertising campaign or
promotional material.
Holding up his speech; which
simply said across die top in block
type Istarray Elstoti, -Leadership"
,
he said, "This is it. What you see is
what you get."
He said he doesn't think people
will see him as being indecisive,
but that the real issue for most
people is they're_.!!still going to
focus on my ving said I wasn't
running
and n becoming interim
leader
"I have done now what I guess is
my trademark. When people came
to me and said they wanted me to
sone I was content that time was
going to move the leadership &bate
on and that people would find a
wide selection of choice. When
folks said I should think about this
last week, I thought maybe it was
the enthusiasm of local folks and
dedicated people, but they told me
it was more than that."
Elston said the circumstances
were right to make the decision
before, but "circumstances have
never been more right than now."
"This is the first day of my cam-
paign, and I am reaching out to
everyone who wants to join us. I
need workers, volunteers, women
and men who share my view that
the Liberal Party is the only clear
alternative to the divisive politics of
Bob Rae and the New Democrats."
Ile said people iris's discouraged
at the state Ontario is in, and "di-
smayed at the apparent inability of
government to find solutions to the
fundamental problems of today."
He said people are worried about
long-term security, whether it's
economic or personal security.
"Right now I have found people
are unable to find light at the end
of a very dark tunnel. They have
seen a continuing downturn in
efforts of, the government to assist
them. The road is paved with an
awful lot of pain and suffering no
more so than in Our own area."
Elston said that in the end there's
more to politics than speeches, a
process of statistical analysis or
proirdses.
It's about listening to people. It's
about caring. It's about working
together to ensure that our future is
secure
