Bottle co lection numbers in th

by Pat tivbigston
It has been said that "enthusiastic
bottle collectors are happiest when
they aredown in the dumps" And
that statement was =WW1 apo
a
propriate for Lnclmow's •usher
(Russell) Whitby at the onset of his
hobby ofcollecting bottles 25 years
ago. At that time, lengthy walks
and foraging invarious places un-
covered treasurers for Buster, that.
others may well have considered
junk.
From a small bottle no bigger
around than your little finger, to
one standing approximately 30
inches high, each tells a •story, The
tiny one goes back to the days
when A. McKim was the local
druggist and oil of cloves was
dispensed in a miniature, cork
closed bottle, The largest was
obtained for him by a family mem-
ber and contained an undetermined
amount of Seagram 7 Crown. Itf
was purchased, full. of : brew, in
1936 for the sum of $40.
Then there is a bottle made by the

slim bottle, with measurement

Another, obtained from overseas
and called a "cod stopperbottle, is
unique ia its design. Inside, slightly
below the neck is a glass lelge with
a round whole that allows the fluid
to escape tothe tops area of the
bottle when tipped. But when you
tip the bottle a glass marble in the
same area proceeds 'to the spout of
the bottle preventing: the same li-
quid
-quid from escaping, Rather put me
in mind of the apparatus used on
the end of liquorr bottles for pouring
shots.
As you hold each bottle in your
hand, a person with any imagination
at all can step back in time to the
days when such bottles were. com-
mon.
One might be correct in thinkilg
a bottle collection ma number in
the hundreds. First-time Visitors to
Buster and bel's how are
simply overwhelmed by the
thousands of original bottles col-
lected from all over the .world in a
quarter of, a century, Tey come in
all .sizes,&sigma and colours,
including those that resemble or
*laments but are actually in fact
bottles.
Bustees passion for c011ecting
bottle is so strong he has even
dreamt about. finding them. Some.
time ago, when an, area resicce
was . being demolished, he found
another different one just as hiS
dream had foretold..
However,, as with most things, •
this hubby requires some.a main- ,
tenafce that of dusting or washing
on aaregular basis. WE 0141 only say
one thing Buster there are not
many woman who would be so
keen on assistingyou with your
hobby as your Mabel is.
Hobbies give various. forms .of
satisfaction to individuals. This one
of Buster's has turned him into. an
historian with thousands of stories
to tell.
Buster Whitby, of Lucknow, for
the past 25 years has been an
avid collector of bottles. His col-
lection numbers in the thousands
from the very tiny to the very
large. (Pat Livingston photo)

One of the most obvious areas : of
physical decline is reaction time. As
we age, the ability . to respond
quickly decreases, causing us to be
slower in our reaction to traffic
problems. The Canadian Safety
