Children go to kindergairen at age
four and start regular school at five
years of age; A student prods
through standards 1, 2, 3 and 4 and
then forms 1 to 7, Forms 1 and 2
• are still considered to be Part of
'prim' wry school. Forms 3 to 7 are
comparable to our high school
Until a student reaches form 5,
they are moved up by age. No one

students advancc according to age.
At the completion of form 5, a
School Certificate is obtained. This
is the. first year a student will en-
counter exams and the first year
that one could possibly be given a
failing grade. Students in form 5
would be 15 or 16_ years of age.
It is interesting to note that at the
,ZealancPtudentsl- -
are allowed to quit school. Prior to
the high rate of unemployment,
Cyndi said many students did ter-
minate their education and either
find jobs or apprentice.
• At the end of farm 6, StAnt
issued a Sixth Fol Cenifiente. At
- this stage of their educatiou,s-a
student is graded on internal and
external assessment, with the em-
phasis being on intemat or the
work and pojects a student
completed during the year. External
assessment is the wridng of exams.
In the 7th form, students are,
working towards a Bursary
Bugsary 0 or U.E. (university
entrance).
When asked if form students are
given a choice as to subjects they
wish to study,
di said that up to
form 2 a student follows a set sys-
tem. After that the course structure
depends on the high school being
attended.
In Christchurch it is a must to
wear school uniforms. There is only
one school in the city that does not
make the wearing of uniforms
mandatory.
Economy
As mentioned before,
unemployment is very high in New
Zealand at this time. Residents
there are also subject to GST at the
rate of 12 per cent. However. Cyndi
said all prices are quoted or listed
with GST included.
One never has to worry about
having. pennies when purchasing
articles. There are no pennies. Their
coins-includeli-10;20-and-50-cent
pieces, as well as $1 and $2 coins
now.
Cyndi pointed out that she came

- Need more accountability and public input
- Taxpayer "pays the piper", taxpayer should "Call the
tune".
- I question the need for Junior Kindergarten
- Retain the basics (including the three R's)
- Our future in this competitive world depends largely
on the quality of our public education system - Let us
"get with it again".
I thank, in advance, those that vote for me and those

1 sympathize with the few who cannot vote. •
Those that are too lazy to get out and vote do not
