disgusted with the sentence given
him, namely "Blackberries are red
when green". He said what is the
use of learning this when ' they do
not know enough themselves,
blackberries be the kind of berry,
red is its colour when , green
(immature), 4lie- colour before it
ripens, is red then black;

• When was the last. time you saw
• a red trillium, sensitive fern, or
even herb Robert in the wild? Can
you tell the difference between a
-choke or black cherry treejust by
the leaves? Over the past weeks,
we have discovered these and many
more of mother nature's secret in
Point Clark.
The unique diversity of this
region has been illustrated to us
through establishing the trails in

flora and fauna in Tuscarora Street
Park and completing Attawandaron
Street Park.
One of the distinctive plants we
found was the Indian Pipe
(Monotlopa uniflora) also known as
the Ghost Plant. It is a translucent
waxy white plant in an inverted
pipe sham. with scale bracts as
leaves. The plants do not grow in
the same place each season but can
disappear for several seasons and
• then re -appear in different locations.
The Indian Pipe receives
• nourishment from the fungus on the
tree roots under the ground.
Therefore, they are impossible to
transplant and should not be picked
or touched; if so the plant will turn
black and die.
This is just one of the multitude
of species found in the local forests
of Point Clark. We encourage you
to get out and discover your local
habitat. See all that nature has to
offer yOu.
