Palliative Care Services
prepares for busy year
At the end of its first full year of
operation, Wingham and Area Palli-
ative Care Services is reviewing the
year's statistics and preparing for
another active year.
During 1990, 22 volunteers
devoted 807 hours to the service,
travelling 682 kilometres to minister
to the dying and their caregivers
and to be available for the
bereaved. The. organization serves
eight communities • in the area,
including Lucknow, Teeswater,
Belgrave, Brussels, Wroxeter,
Gome, Fordwich and Wingham.
Twenty-nine clients were served
during the year,18 of these termin-
ally ill patients and 11 bereaved.
Referrals came from Home Care,
the Cancer Society, the hospital, the
clergy, doctors and the patient
1
himself or his family.
Palliative care is a support system
which ministers to the terminally ill
patient and loved ones. Trained
volunteers are a present help at a
tirne when maple are struggling
with the realities of death and con-
tinue to offer support for family and
friends trying to come to terms with
the loss. Area and P 1 iaative
Care Services continues to make
appeals for funds, so the service
may remain operational and effec-
tive. Fund-raising. events are being
planned for the spring and public
awareness will hopefully be
heightened, during Palliative Care
Week, April 22-27. Anyone wishing
more information about this valu-
able service may call the palliative
care office at 357-2720.
