BNDP delayed WALKERTON--Bruce Township has yet .to convince the Atomic Energy Control Board to allow more development around the Bl D, in spite of repeatedpresen- tations by Reeve Ron Andrews. Andrews told Bruce County coun- cil, on Tuesday, Feb. 19, he recently went to . Ottawa with a request to allow higher . density development within eight kilometres of the BNPD. Residential develop- ment is now limited as a precaution against possible: hydrogen sulphide leaks from the heavy water plant at the nuclear site. Andrews wants more homes and cottages allowed on the valuable Lake Huron shoreline between five and eight kilometres from the plaant. Part of the push for change comes from development pressures and the resulting tax dollars it would bring to the township, part of it comes. because Andrews feels the existing warning system for the heavy water plant makes the area safe. ° A gas leak would require residents to stay indoors, but would not requite evacuation,, Andrews said. Andrews was at first encouraged Turn to page 3• ounty wants more liberal bounties WALKERTON Bruce . County has a meeting later this month with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) as part of its continued efforts .to get more liberal bounties on coyotes and wolves. The Bruce -Grey Predator com- mittee will meet Wednesday, Feb. 27 (today) with the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources in hopes of lifting restrictions on coyote. boun- ties. Chairman Roy Bulien told Bruce County council, at its Tuesday, Feb. 19 meeting, he would like to see permission for groups of hunters to sweep through areas where predator complaints have been made. In the meantime, Bruce County is recommending the bounty payment be doubled to $50 and will ask Grey County to do the same. Noting only eight bounty payments in 1990 and 11 so fax this year, the county also recommends property owners be advised about the bounty system. o vent• on .expenses • 1eong reviewed WALIORTON The executive committee is looking at convention capenses as it tries to get a handle on what could be a double-digit county budget increase. The committee will now :review all requests ; to attend out of province conventions before those renuesta go to council. Finance chairman Rick Gilbert said •it's an attempt to "get a handle" on general government costs, though he said those costs ase only five per cent in the past year. Included in the ' general government is $264,000 in pay and. expenses for council- and commit- tees. Leading the list for 1990 was then -Warden Dave Thomson with a $37,000 tab, followed by members of the restructuring committee at $10,000 to $13,000 each. Attempts to trim budget • from page 1 • budget before the freeze was im- po A dramatic increase in the welfare caseload has added to Bruce Coun- ty's budget problems. Social set- vices ervices had its .first deficit in 15 years in 1990, and is looking for a 78 per cent hike in the county share of the welfare budget to meet demand this year. The increase would put the county's sham of welfare costs at $1,058,000. In spite of the- figures, Social Services Commissioner Dick Ver- rips Verrips said Bruce County is in "better shape" than the average municipality in Ontario according to provincial statistics. •
