Bruce Cunt3 council
attempts to trim budget
Bruce County has imposed a
hiring freeze in an effort to trim
more than three-quarters of a mil-
lion dollars from its preliminary
budget figures.
Finance chairman Rick Gilbert
described the freeze, to Bruce

a way to bring the county one- step
closer" to a reasonable budget
increase.
Preliminary figures from county
depar.tments point to a 28.1 per cent
hike m the net coon!), levy; Gilbert
said a single -digit =ease would
be acceptable, but noted drastic cuts
are needed if that goal is to be
reached by final budget time next
month.
The finance committee admit the
hiring freeze alone won't be able to
eliminate the $780,000 Gilbert
wants cut from the initial budget,
but said it's a method that's fair to
all departments without affecting
services the county offers.
"The finance committee couldn't
see any real drastic changes that the
people on the street would notice,"
said Gilbert. "Some departments
may have to cut back their hours a
bit."
But members of the social ser-
vices committee disagreed with that

the aged.
"It will really wreak havoc With
our plans for the homes:" said
Reeve Stu Mowry. "General plans
we had for the administrafion of the
homes are set back a whole year."
Reeve Brad Davis agreed with
Mowry, saying the hiring freeze
'would really hurt" - the seniors'
program..
Davis warned that without extra
staff, the program is 'really in
trouble" in the peninsula, Paisley
and Kincardine areas, and may have
to be curtailed.
An effort to get the social ser-
vices and homes committees
exempte4 from the hiring freeze
failed.
Later Mowry insisted the commit-
tee should "at least" have been
given a chance to rework their
