Dome and Dodie MelAland, of Kineerdine. have been Terrarium McLelland Auction Service sine March of 1953. And in the inter- vegieg yoncs% caw have eaga @my changes in the business. There aren't so many private auctions now," said Dome McLelland in au interview with The News Jan. 25. Mr. McLelland also eoted there are a lot more people coming from out of town, from as far away as Toronto and London, in order to purchase antiques "where at one tine it would just be local people" at an auction in this area. The McLellands are beth certified auctioneers. In fact, Mrs. McLelland was the first female auctioneer in Canada, when she was licensed in 1953. In order to be certified, the McLellands attended two months of classes in Kansas City, Missouri, in January and February of 1953. According to Mr. McLelland, the course mainly consisted of breath- ing and voice cont, as well as learning various "filler" words. To practice their vocal techniques, the McLellands had to make records of themselves at school; they would then listen to the records and pick out their own mistekes, The course also consisted of courses on appraising; how to keep up TV £14 laws and taxes; and proper and improper words to be used in an auction. The only Canadians attending the school at the time, both were licensed after two months, and set up business in March of that year. According to the McLellarids, the most important thing is to be able to properly appraise any item. It means a lot of work on the part of the auctioneers, since they have to know the values of everything, Iditiffrgir 1111111111111 II Malin • • Ga.I...vertigo M=0 US11NEIS WANTEP PAUL ZINN 528.2411 ALVIN R088 395.3174 WARREN ZINN 528.3710 156 ACRES Turnberry Twp. 70 acres cleared, balance rokied bush, good recreation preperty $89,900. 39.5 ACRES. The McLellands have sold their business to Grant McDonald, an auctioneer who has worked out of Ripley for a number of years, and who has assisted them in the past year. They said that over the past few • years, the majority of their business has been estate sales, which means packing and moving the pieces, and seg them up for auction. They've found the work a little too tiring, so they decided to get out of the business. They will still be helping the McDonalds a bit, "working with them to get them to get them acquainted with certain things", said Mr. McLelland. But he said they wouldn't be contribut- ing "in any big capacity". The McLellands have no definite plans for the future right now. Mr. McLelland said he isn't looking for steady work; while Mrs. McLelland added that "every time we make piens, something always turns up". They have no plans to go to their home in Florida this winter, tlickiww Seutinelp WedinSiloyo February 6101991 -Page 3 onin After 38 years in the auction business, Dorn and Dodie McLelizoid are ready to retire.
